Mercedes-Benz Key Replacement: Why We Send You to the Dealer

A straight answer from a locksmith who sends Mercedes key work to the dealer: why we do it, what the dealer will ask you for, and the two Mercedes jobs we still handle on site.

Quick answer

For a new Mercedes-Benz key, a spare, or a replacement after losing every key, go to an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer. Mercedes controls key ordering through its dealers, tied to the car's VIN and verified ownership, so EZ Car Keyz refers that work there. We still handle Mercedes lockouts and broken key extraction on site.

Key takeaways
  • New Mercedes-Benz keys, spares and all-keys-lost replacements come from an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer, ordered against the car's VIN.
  • Bring a government photo ID, the registration or title, and the VIN, because the dealer verifies ownership before ordering anything.
  • Plan for the key to take days rather than hours, and ask the dealer up front whether the car has to be there when the key arrives.
  • EZ Car Keyz still opens locked Mercedes-Benz vehicles without damage and removes broken keys from door and trunk locks.

Can a locksmith replace a Mercedes-Benz key?

Not at EZ Car Keyz. Every new Mercedes-Benz key, spare key and all-keys-lost replacement goes to an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer, and we tell you that on the first call, before anyone drives anywhere.

That is not how we handle other makes. For most cars we cut and program transponder keys, flip keys, laser-cut keys and push-to-start fobs wherever the car is parked, usually in a single visit. Mercedes-Benz is the exception, and that is a deliberate policy.

What we still do for Mercedes owners is real work, covered further down: getting you into a locked car without damage, and getting a broken key out of a lock.

Why do Mercedes-Benz keys go through the dealer?

Because Mercedes-Benz controls how its keys are made. A new key is ordered through an authorized dealer against the car's VIN, after the dealer confirms you own the car, and the key is produced for that one vehicle.

With most makes, a licensed locksmith can do the whole job on site with professional programmers and the security data manufacturers release to vetted professionals. We are NASTF Vehicle Security Professional certified for exactly that work. Mercedes-Benz is built around manufacturer-controlled key ordering, with the dealer as the point of contact, and we follow that path instead of working around it.

The upside for you: the key you leave with is a factory key ordered for your car, and if anything about it needs attention later, you are already working with the people who ordered it.

What does the Mercedes dealer key process look like?

In general terms: you prove ownership, the dealer orders a key for your VIN, the key arrives, and the dealer finishes any setup the car needs. It usually takes days, not hours.

  1. 1
    Call the service department first

Say whether you still have one working key or have lost every key. That answer changes what they need from you and whether the car has to come in.

  2. 2
    Gather your documents

Government photo ID, the registration or title, and the VIN. The VIN is printed on the registration and the insurance card, and on most cars it is visible through the windshield at the lower driver side corner.

  3. 3
    Place the order

The dealer verifies ownership and orders the key for your specific car. Ask how long it is expected to take and how they will let you know it has arrived.

  4. 4
    Ask about the car

Ask whether the car needs to be at the dealer when the key is ready, or only you and your paperwork. If it needs to be there and no key exists, ask who arranges the tow.

  5. 5
    Test before you leave

Lock, unlock, open the trunk and start the car with each new key before you drive away. It is much easier to sort out a problem while you are still at the dealer than from your driveway.

Timing depends on the dealer, the order and the model. If the car is your daily driver and every key is gone, line up a ride or a rental early instead of waiting for the call.

What should I bring to the Mercedes-Benz dealer?

Bring a government photo ID, the vehicle registration or the title, and the VIN. The name on your ID should match the name on the registration or title.

  • Government-issued photo ID, such as a driver license or passport
  • Current registration or the title, showing you as the owner
  • The VIN, written down or photographed, in case the paperwork is locked in the car
  • Any working key you still have, if you are adding a spare
  • For a leased or financed car, ask the dealer whether they need anything else

If the car is not in your name, such as a parent's car, an estate vehicle or a recent private sale, call before you go and ask exactly what they accept. Notarized authorization from the registered owner or transfer paperwork is often what they ask for, but each dealer sets its own rules.

We hold our own jobs to the same standard. Every EZ Car Keyz job includes ownership verification, no exceptions, because California locksmith licensing requires it. A dealer that asks for documents is doing its job.

Locked out of your Mercedes-Benz? We can open it

A lockout is not a key job, so it does not need the dealer. We drive to the car, open it without drilling or breaking glass, and you are back inside.

That covers keys locked inside, a fob that died with the car locked, and a trunk that will not open. If a child or a pet is inside, say so right away: that call gets priority response. If anyone inside is in distress, call emergency services first.

A lockout also helps when every key is lost. Opening the car lets you get the registration out of the glovebox for the dealer and collect your belongings while you arrange the new key. We quote a flat rate by phone or text before we dispatch, with no service-call fee or after-hours upcharge on top.

Key broken off in a Mercedes door or trunk lock? We remove it

Clearing a broken blade out of a door or trunk lock is extraction work, not key origination, so we do it on site. If you need a new key or blade afterward, that part goes to the dealer.

Many smart keys hide a thin metal emergency blade inside the fob, for opening the door when the fob battery dies. A thin blade in a stiff, rarely used lock can snap. Do not dig at the piece with pliers, a pin or a knife, and never put glue on it: each of those pushes the piece deeper or seizes the lock, and a short extraction turns into a lock repair.

We pull the piece with extraction tools, check that the lock turns freely, and leave it working. The extraction is ours; the replacement key is the dealer's. Our broken key extraction page covers the process in more detail, and so does our guide on what to do with a broken car key.

Extraction only. A replacement Mercedes-Benz key is ordered through the dealer.

How Mercedes owners can avoid a lost-key emergency

Order a spare from the dealer while you still have a working key. Adding a key while one exists avoids the tow, the wait without a car and the paperwork scramble that come with losing every key.

  • Keep the spare somewhere safe outside the car, such as a kitchen drawer or with a family member
  • Replace the fob battery when the range starts to drop; the owner's manual shows how
  • Know where the emergency blade is in your fob and use it gently in the door
  • Keep a photo of the registration and VIN on your phone

When something does go wrong between 6:00 AM and 11:30 PM, 7 days a week, call or text us for a lockout or a broken key anywhere in Ventura County, Santa Barbara County, San Diego County and Malibu. Our Ventura County Mercedes-Benz page and San Diego Mercedes-Benz page lay out the same policy for each market.

Frequently asked questions

Will EZ Car Keyz make a spare key for my Mercedes-Benz?
No. Spare keys for Mercedes-Benz vehicles go through an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer, the same as new keys and all-keys-lost replacements. The dealer orders the key against your VIN after checking ownership. If you still have one working key, now is the easiest time to order the spare, because it saves you from a lost-key situation later.
How long does a Mercedes key from the dealer usually take?
Plan on days rather than hours. The exact timing depends on the dealer, the order and your car, so ask for an estimate when you order and ask how they will tell you it has arrived. If every key is lost and you rely on the car daily, arrange other transportation early instead of waiting on the call.
Can you open my Mercedes-Benz if the keys are locked inside?
Yes. Lockouts are not key origination, so we handle them. We come to the car and open it without drilling or breaking glass. We verify ownership on every job with photo ID matching the registration, the title with matching ID, or notarized authorization from the registered owner. If a child or pet is inside, tell us right away for priority response.
Does the dealer need my car there to make a new key?
It depends on the model and the situation, so ask the service department when you order. Sometimes the order only needs you, your documents and the VIN, and the car comes in later for setup or testing. Sometimes the car needs to be there from the start. Knowing which up front tells you whether you need a tow, and when.
Why is Mercedes-Benz different from the other makes you work on?
Mercedes-Benz runs key ordering through its authorized dealers, tied to the VIN and to verified ownership. With most makes we can cut, program and pair a key on site with professional tools and NASTF security access. For Mercedes-Benz we send key origination to the dealer, because that path reliably ends with a working factory key. We still do lockouts and broken key extraction.
What does it cost to have you open a Mercedes or remove a broken key?
We quote a flat rate by phone or text before we dispatch, and the price we quote is the price you pay. There is no service-call fee, trip fee or after-hours upcharge on top of it. The lockout and extraction tables on this page show the current ranges for Ventura County and San Diego.
