Ignition Repair Options We Offer

Prices below are typical ranges. Your exact cost depends on year, make, model, and whether all keys have been lost. We'll confirm the price before any work starts.

01

Ignition Cylinder Repair

Key is getting harder to turn every week? Grinding sound when you twist it? That's cylinder wear, and catching it early saves you hundreds over a full replacement.

Cylinder repair on a 2014 Toyota Tacoma in a driveway in Fillmore, California.

Ignition cylinders fail in predictable ways: worn wafers that no longer spring back, a binding housing clogged with debris, or a damaged cam that won't release the steering lock. In many cases we can replace the worn wafers, clean and re-lubricate the housing, and restore full function without pulling the steering column apart.

02

Full Cylinder Replacement

Cylinder is cracked, force-turned, or the wafers are completely collapsed? Repair isn't an option anymore. We replace the entire unit and recode it to your existing key.

Full ignition cylinder replacement on a 2012 Ford Fusion at a driveway in Ojai, California.

Full ignition cylinder replacement involves pulling the steering column trim, extracting the old cylinder using a release pin or drilling the shear bolts, and pressing in a new housing. We recode the new cylinder to accept your existing key so you don't end up carrying two keys for one vehicle.

03

Ignition Switch Replacement

Key turns fine but the car won't start? Accessories cut out mid-drive? The cylinder might be fine. The electrical switch behind it is what's failing.

Ignition switch replacement on a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan at a residence in Oak Park, California. Key turned smooth, but the dashboard kept cutting out mid-drive because the electrical switch behind the cylinder was worn.

The ignition switch is the electrical component that sits behind the mechanical cylinder. The cylinder turns a cam, which actuates the switch, which sends power to the starter, accessories, and electronics.

Stuck Key Extraction & Repair

Key won't come out of the ignition? Stop forcing it. A stuck key is a symptom of a wafer problem inside the cylinder, and forcing it risks snapping the blade off inside.

Stuck key extraction from the ignition of a 2016 GMC Acadia at a parking lot in Westlake Village, California. A collapsed wafer was pinning the blade at an odd depth, and the steering lock was loaded against the cam.

Keys get stuck because a wafer inside the cylinder has collapsed and is trapping the key at a depth that prevents the cam from returning to the park position. In some cases the steering lock is engaged under load and needs to be released mechanically before the key will budge.

05

Wafer Rebuild & Rekey

Need to change the key without replacing the whole cylinder? A wafer rebuild lets you invalidate old keys and start fresh.

Wafer rebuild and rekey on a 2014 Honda Odyssey at a driveway in Santa Barbara, California. Owner bought the van used and wanted every prior key dead.

A wafer rebuild replaces the spring-loaded wafers inside the existing cylinder and resets the lock to accept a new key cut. The cylinder housing stays in place.

06

Anti-Theft System Reset

Security light stuck on and the engine won't crank? That's the immobilizer locking you out, and it's not always a dead battery or a bad key.

Anti-theft reset on a 2016 Ford Escape at a parking lot in Carpinteria, California. The PATS security light was solid, the engine refused to crank, and a fresh battery and key hadn't cleared it.

Modern anti-theft systems, including PATS, VATS, Passlock, Passlock II, and manufacturer-proprietary IMMO platforms, can trigger false no-start conditions from a low battery, a failed transponder read, a software fault, or even an aftermarket alarm interfering with the OEM system.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my ignition needs repair or full replacement?
We diagnose in-vehicle before recommending either one. If the wafers are worn but the housing is intact, a repair or rebuild is usually the better value. If the housing is cracked, the cylinder has been force-turned, or the wafers are completely collapsed, replacement is the only reliable option. We'll show you what we find and let you decide.
Can you fix my ignition without replacing the whole steering column?
Yes. The ignition cylinder and the ignition switch are both serviceable components that come out of the steering column independently. We don't replace columns. We pull the specific part that failed, repair or replace it, and put the column back together. The rest of the steering column hardware stays untouched.
Will I need a new key after ignition work?
Depends on the service. Cylinder repair and switch replacement don't change your key. Full cylinder replacement can be recoded to your existing key so you keep the same one. Wafer rebuild and rekey intentionally change the key, which is the whole point of that service. We tell you ahead of time whether your current key will still work.
What's the difference between the ignition cylinder and the ignition switch?
The cylinder is the mechanical part your key goes into. It has wafers that read the key's physical cuts and a cam that rotates when you turn the key. The switch is the electrical part behind the cylinder that receives the cam rotation and sends power to the starter and accessories. Either one can fail independently. A stiff or grinding key usually means the cylinder. An intermittent no-start with a smooth key turn usually means the switch.
Can a bad ignition trigger my anti-theft system?
Yes. If the ignition cylinder isn't rotating the cam fully, the transponder antenna ring around it may not get a clean read on the key chip. That partial read can trigger the immobilizer and prevent the engine from starting. We check for this during every ignition diagnosis so we're not chasing an electrical ghost when the root cause is mechanical.
Why does stuck key extraction cost money if you're just pulling a key out?
Because a stuck key is never just a stuck key. A wafer has collapsed inside the cylinder and is physically trapping the blade. Extracting it without snapping the key requires specific tools and technique, and the cylinder needs to be inspected and repaired afterward or the key will get stuck again. The price covers the extraction, the diagnosis, and the wafer repair.
How long can I drive with a failing ignition before it becomes an emergency?
Every day you drive with a grinding or stiff cylinder, the wafers wear further and the risk of a complete seizure or a snapped key increases. There's no reliable timeline. Some cylinders degrade slowly over months. Others go from stiff to seized in a week. The cheapest and least stressful option is always to fix it before it strands you somewhere.
Is ignition repair something a regular mechanic can do?
Some mechanics handle ignition work, but most will send you to the dealer because it involves lock disassembly and potentially transponder resyncing. We're locksmiths who specialize in automotive ignition hardware. We carry the mechanical tools for the cylinder and the diagnostic platforms for the transponder and anti-theft system. One technician, one visit, both sides of the job handled.
