Three Decades of Harley Keys, Brass to Encrypted Fob
Round keys, transponders, proximity fobs - here is which one your Harley runs.
Mechanical Keys: The Early Standard
Most riders never think about which generation their Harley belongs to until they need a key cut. The answer almost always falls in one of three buckets. Pre-2007 bikes use a simple mechanical setup, and an HYD-12, HYD-13, or HYD-15 through HYD-18 blank cut on the Xhorse Dolphin gets you riding the same hour.
Chip Keys and Proximity Fobs: 2007 Through Today
From 2007 forward, the ECM demands a chipped handshake before granting spark, so a fresh transponder gets paired the same visit. A 2014 or newer Street Glide, Road Glide, or Softail runs a proximity fob with a CR2032 battery and a 5-digit PIN backup baked into the handlebar switches. We carry the blanks, the chips, fresh CR2032s, and the programmer in the van. Every step happens at your bike, backed by BSIS LCO#6792 and NASTF VSP credentials.
Inside the Harley Immobilizer - Pager Range, Module, PIN Backup
Smart Security, TSSM, and the 5-digit PIN backup most riders forget exists.
How the Immobilizer Works
Smart Security is the catch-all name for Harley's bundled immobilizer, alarm, motion sensing, and pager (up to 400 yards). Walk away from the bike and a tilt alert pings your phone. The starter and ignition stay locked until the registered fob comes back; lose the fob and you can punch in a 5-digit PIN through the turn signal switches with the odometer reading back the digits.
Where the Module Lives and Why That Matters
The system became a factory option around 2007 on Twin Cam bikes and ships standard on Milwaukee-Eight Touring models from 2017 forward. The security module hides under the seat and the fob talks directly to the ECM, so the bike has to be present for any key work. That is the workflow EZ Car Keyz was built around. We come to the bike and program without a flatbed.
Harley Dealer Pricing vs. One Mobile Visit
Why pay dealer markup when a mobile tech rolls to your bike?
What the Dealership Charges
Dealer writeups look about the same everywhere: $95 to $350 for the fob, $100 to $300 for programming, plus a diagnostic line item that always appears. Total typically lands $200 to $500, and that math assumes the bike makes it to the service bay. Most riders need a tow first because the immobilizer demands a live ECM connection, then the bike sits in queue for one to three days, longer if a fob has to ship in.
How the Mobile Visit Compares
Call (619) 876-1271, get an exact number on the phone, and a tech rolls out with HYD blanks, CR2032s, the programmer, and the Xhorse cutter loaded in the van. Most Harley jobs wrap in under an hour at your address. Skip the flatbed entirely and pay 50 to 70 percent less than the dealer.

Stuck barrel, dead CR2032, snapped blade - all fixed at your bike.
How Harley Keys Evolved from Brass to Proximity Fob
Early History
Harley electronics span polished kickstart Evos to brand-new proximity Tourings, and the cutoff years tell the story. Pre-2007 bikes are pure mechanical, no chip in the blade. 2007 marked the arrival of the Turn Signal Security Module with chipped keys on premium trims. By 2011 to 2014, the Body Control Module brought 24-digit programming codes to Dyna, Softail, and Touring lines.
Why the Cutoff Year Decides the Visit Length
From 2014 onward, virtually every Harley ditched the primary mechanical key for a proximity fob. A pre-2007 bike is a straight cut on the Xhorse Dolphin and you ride. A post-2014 bike needs the fob paired to the ECM before it fires. Either way, our mobile rig handles the full job at your address. Quote in under a minute on the phone.
What San Diego Harley Riders Tell Us After the Job
What Riders Report
The pattern across our 100-plus five-star Google reviews looks the same week to week. Riders waited two days on a dealer quote in the $200 to $500 range that demanded a tow, found EZ Car Keyz, and had a working bike by that afternoon for half the money.
What Harley Owners Tell New Buyers
The advice from San Diego Harley owners is simple. Order a spare coded key before you need one, and write the 5-digit Security PIN somewhere safe. The riders who learn it the hard way are the ones who called us with a single dead fob and no backup. Add a spare now while the original still works - 50 to 70 percent below dealer rates.
