Automotive Locksmith Services

EZ Car Keyz is a fully mobile locksmith service. We come directly to your vehicle with professional key cutting machines, transponder programming equipment, and every tool needed to get you back on the road. Every service listed below is performed on site at your location.

Car Key Replacement

Lost your only car key? We create a brand new working key from scratch, even with no existing key to copy. Our process starts with decoding your vehicle's lock or pulling the key code by VIN, then cutting and programming a new key right at your car. This service covers standard keys, transponder chip keys, laser cut keys, and smart key fobs for most makes and models.

Car Key Programming

Modern vehicles use transponder chips and encrypted immobilizer systems that require electronic programming before a new key will start the engine. We use professional diagnostic tools to sync your new key's chip with your car's immobilizer through the OBD port, and we carry the equipment for more advanced procedures like EEPROM and bench programming when needed. Whether you need a spare key added or a full reset after losing all your keys, we handle it on the spot.

Car Lockout Service

Locked your keys in the car? We use non-destructive entry methods to get your door open without damaging your vehicle. Our approach relies on professional air wedges and coated long-reach tools designed to work with modern vehicle construction, including side curtain airbags and electronic lock buttons. We avoid outdated methods that risk bending frames or triggering airbag systems.

Duplicate Car Keys

Having a spare key made while you still have a working one is the smartest move you can make. Duplicating a key is faster, simpler, and significantly cheaper than replacing one after it is lost. We cut and program spare keys on site for traditional edge cut keys, high security sidewinder keys, switchblade flip keys, and remote head keys.

Key Fob Replacement and Smart Key Programming

Push to start vehicles use proximity fobs that communicate wirelessly with your car through encrypted radio signals. We program replacement smart key fobs for a wide range of makes and models, restoring keyless entry, push button start, and remote functions. If your fob is damaged or lost, we can supply and program a new one at your vehicle.

Ignition Repair and Replacement

A worn or damaged ignition cylinder can prevent your key from turning or cause it to get stuck. We repair and replace ignition lock cylinders on site, and we can rekey the new cylinder to match your existing keys so you do not end up carrying multiple keys for one vehicle.

Broken Key Extraction

If your key snapped off inside the door lock or ignition, we extract the broken piece without damaging the lock cylinder. Once the broken fragment is removed, we cut a new key and program it if your vehicle requires a transponder chip.

We serve customers at their vehicle location, whether that is a parking lot, driveway, office, or roadside, and we carry parts and equipment for the most common makes and models so the job gets done in one visit. Car Key Types Explained

Not all car keys are created equal. The type of key your vehicle uses depends on its year, make, and model, and the key type directly affects key replacement cost, programming complexity, and security level. Here is a breakdown of the most common key types on the road today.

Transponder Keys

RFID chip in the key head communicates with the engine immobilizer. Standard on most vehicles since the mid 1990s.

When you insert the key and turn the ignition, an antenna coil around the ignition barrel sends a low frequency radio signal that powers the chip. The chip responds with a coded signal, and the vehicle's immobilizer checks that code before allowing the engine to start. If the code does not match, the car blocks fuel and spark entirely. Early systems used fixed codes, while newer transponders use rolling code encryption where the valid code changes with every ignition cycle, making interception and cloning far more difficult.

Transponder Keys example

Smart Keys and Proximity Fobs

Wireless fobs for push to start vehicles. The car detects the fob in your pocket and unlocks and starts without inserting a key.

Your car has multiple antennas in the door handles, cabin, and trunk that detect when a valid fob is nearby. Each manufacturer has its own name for this system. Toyota calls it Smart Key System, Honda uses Smart Entry, Ford brands it Intelligent Access, Mercedes calls it Keyless Go, and BMW uses Comfort Access. Newer vehicles are adding Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology for precise distance measurement that resists relay theft attacks. If your smart key battery dies, most fobs contain a hidden emergency blade to unlock the door manually, and you can start the car by holding the dead fob against the start button.

Smart Keys and Proximity Fobs example

Switchblade and Flip Keys

Folding blade with built-in remote buttons. One compact unit instead of a separate key and fob.

The metal blade folds into the fob body and flips out when you press a release button. The housing combines remote lock and unlock buttons with a transponder equipped blade. The blade is typically laser cut or edge cut depending on the make. These became popular from the mid 2000s onward and are common on Volkswagen, Audi, Hyundai, Kia, and several GM and Honda models.

Switchblade and Flip Keys example

Laser Cut and Sidewinder Keys

High security blade with a winding groove milled down the center. Harder to duplicate, requires specialized equipment.

This design allows the key to be inserted in either direction and makes unauthorized duplication significantly harder because it requires specialized milling equipment that most standard key shops do not carry. Laser cut keys first appeared on higher end vehicles from Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, and Acura in the late 1990s and 2000s, and they are now found on a wide range of mid level and newer vehicles. Nearly all laser cut keys also contain a transponder chip, giving them two layers of security.

Laser Cut and Sidewinder Keys example

Basic Metal Keys

Simple edge cut blades with no electronics. The least expensive key type to replace.

Any correctly cut copy will start the car, which makes them the least secure key type. These were standard on most vehicles through the early to mid 1990s and are still found on some older trucks, fleet vehicles, and economy models. Replacing a basic key is straightforward and inexpensive since no programming is involved.

Basic Metal Keys example

VATS Keys (GM Vehicles)

GM anti-theft system using a resistor pellet in the blade. Used on Corvette, Camaro, Firebird, and Cadillac models.

VATS stands for Vehicle Anti Theft System, used by General Motors from the mid 1980s through the early 2000s. The ignition reads the resistance value, and if it does not match one of the 15 preset values, the starter and fuel system are disabled. VATS keys require precise resistor pellet matching during replacement.

Why Choose a Mobile Locksmith Over the Dealer?

Cost

30 to 50 percent less than dealer pricing, no tow fees.

Dealerships charge a premium for key replacement because of overhead, OEM only parts pricing, and limited competition within their service department. On top of that, if you have lost all your keys and the car will not start, the dealer usually requires a tow to their shop, which adds another $100 to $300 to the bill. A mobile locksmith comes to your vehicle and eliminates that cost entirely. We offer flat-rate pricing with no dealer markup.

dealer vs locksmith price comparison cost

Convenience

We come to your location. No tow, no drop-off, no waiting room.

Getting a key replaced at a dealer means coordinating a tow (if needed), scheduling an appointment, dropping off the vehicle, and waiting for the work to be completed. The entire process can stretch across multiple days if the key needs to be ordered. A mobile locksmith drives to wherever your car is sitting, whether that is your driveway, a parking garage, or a roadside shoulder, and handles everything in a single visit. No tow needed, no dealer appointment required.

mobile locksmith van stocked key blanks all makes

Speed

Same-day service, most jobs finished within an hour of arrival.

Dealers often need to order keys cut to your VIN from the manufacturer, which can take one to three days before they even start key programming. Once you have an appointment, expect to spend a few hours at the dealership between intake, waiting for a bay, and the actual programming process. A mobile locksmith carries key blanks, cutting machines, and programming equipment in the van. Same-day service is standard.

Availability

6 AM to 11:30 PM, seven days a week, including holidays.

Dealer service departments operate on fixed business hours, typically Monday through Friday with limited Saturday availability. If you lose your key on a Sunday evening or a holiday, you are waiting until they reopen. Mobile locksmiths offer flexible scheduling that covers evenings and weekends, so you are not stuck without a car until Monday morning.

Capability

Same professional tools as the dealer, plus services dealers will not do.

We handle transponder keys, laser cut keys, smart key fobs, immobilizer resets, and ignition repair across dozens of makes and models. We also do things most dealers will not, like on site ignition repair, lock cylinder rebuilds, rekeying a vehicle after key theft, and offering aftermarket key options that are OEM compatible at a lower cost.

Car Key Replacement Cost

Key Type Is the Biggest Factor

The cost of replacing a car key depends on several factors, and the biggest one is what type of key your vehicle uses. A basic metal key with no electronics is the simplest and cheapest to replace. A transponder chip key costs more because it requires programming to sync with your car's immobilizer. Smart key fobs for push to start vehicles sit at the higher end because the fobs themselves are more expensive and the programming process is more involved.

Year, Make, and Model Matter

Your vehicle's year, make, and model also play a significant role. Common domestic and Japanese models with widely available aftermarket key blanks tend to fall in the mid range. European luxury brands and newer vehicles with advanced encryption or manufacturer restricted programming often cost more because of specialized parts and additional steps in the programming process. Our pricing is typically 30 to 50 percent less than dealer rates.

Spare Key vs. All Keys Lost

The situation matters too. Adding a spare key while you still have a working one is faster and less expensive than an all keys lost scenario, where the locksmith needs to decode your locks or pull security data and program from scratch.

For lockout service, where we open your locked vehicle without replacing any keys, EZ Car Keyz charges $105 to $145 in San Diego County.

We always provide a clear flat-rate quote before we start any work, so you know exactly what the job costs before we touch your vehicle. Call or text (619) 876-1271 to get a quote for your specific year, make, and model.

BSIS Licensed (LCO #6792)

California state licensed, background checked, regulatory oversight.

What It Means
EZ Car Keyz is a licensed Locksmith Company through the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Our BSIS License number is LCO#6792, and you can verify it anytime on the BSIS website.

What the License Requires
This license requires a state and federal criminal background check through the CA DOJ and FBI on all company principals, active regulatory oversight, and compliance with California's advertising and consumer protection rules.

Why It Matters
When you hire a BSIS licensed locksmith, you are working with a business that is on file with a state regulatory agency that investigates complaints and has the authority to discipline or revoke licenses. Unlicensed operators have no such accountability.

How to Protect Yourself
Many of the "$19 service call" bait and switch scams you see online are run by unlicensed outfits that disappear when problems come up. Always ask for a BSIS license number before hiring any locksmith in California, and verify it on the BSIS website before the technician arrives.
