About Dodge Keys

Every Dodge from 1998 forward sits on Chrysler's Sentry Key foundation, but the quirks pile up generation by generation. SKIM module on a 2006 Charger. RF Hub on a 2014 Durango. Possible Key Programming Lockdown firmware on a 2020 Challenger. The right tool for each layer rides along on every call across the 619.
What Actually Happens on a Dodge Key Call

Trace the security architecture and four milestones stand out. 1998: Sentry Key Immobilizer System debuts on select Dodges. Through the 2000s: ID 46 transponder chips give way to ID 47 and 4D rolling-code variants. 2011: Keyless Enter-N-Go brings proximity push-to-start to Chargers, Challengers, and Durangos. 2021: voluntary Key Programming Lockdown firmware rolls out to 2015-and-newer Challengers and Chargers, changing how future keys can be added. Every Dodge call we run fits somewhere on that timeline.

How the Mobile Visit Actually Runs
The visit looks the same regardless of which milestone your Dodge falls under. A 2006 Charger with the basic SKIM module, a 2014 Durango running an RF Hub, or a 2020 Challenger that may carry the lockdown firmware all get serviced the same way: park, plug into the OBD port, cut the blade, write the appropriate pairing for that platform, hand back a working key. No tow truck, no dealer trip.
Dodge Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz

Walk into a Dodge dealer with a proximity key issue and the price tag runs $250 to $550-plus before the diagnostic fee gets layered on. All-keys-lost work falls in the $150 to $500 range plus a flatbed bill since the car can't move under its own power. The mobile-locksmith number for the same OEM-spec work lands well under that, with no tow, no waiting room, and no multi-day wait for parts.

What to Do When Your Dodge Fob Dies

Door first. Find the small release button or slide on the side of the fob, push it, and the emergency blade pops free of the housing. Use the blade in the driver's door manually. Heads-up: the factory alarm may chirp for a second when the door opens, but it cuts off as soon as the car's proximity antenna detects the fob inside the cabin.

Inside the cabin with the door closed, press the dead fob flat against the push-to-start button with the button-side or logo-side facing the dash. The proximity antenna inside the start button can pull the fob's passive RFID chip through induction, which is independent of the fob battery entirely.

Keep the fob pressed to the button, plant your foot firmly on the brake, then push the start button normally. The engine catches. This sequence works the same way on the Charger, Challenger, Durango, Journey, and Ram across all push-to-start years from 2011 forward.

If nothing catches, shift the fob's contact point on the button by a few degrees and try the start sequence again. One scenario where this trick can't help: if the truck or car's 12-volt battery is also flat. The fob method needs the vehicle to have working power, so jump start first if that's the case.

First chance after you're back on the road, get the CR2032 swapped out. A coin in the seam splits the fob housing open without scratching. Drop the new cell in with positive facing up, snap the case back together. No scan-tool reprogramming on the other side.
Pro Tip

Specific advice for any 2015-or-newer Challenger or Charger owner who hasn't had the Key Programming Lockdown update applied yet: book a spare key before you book the update. The lockdown firmware is free at any Dodge dealership and meaningfully drops the theft risk by closing the RF Hub programming exploit that thieves leaned on heavily for these models, including incidents reported across San Diego County.

What Lockdown Means for Spares
Catch with the lockdown: once it's live, future key additions get more involved, and an all-keys-lost scenario requires replacing the RF Hub module itself in addition to cutting and writing new keys. A spare key already in your safe before the update happens dodges that entire problem. Separately, the Flipper Zero device can capture rolling codes from older Dodge fobs for repeated lock and unlock access, which makes a $10 Faraday pouch a worthwhile insurance policy.
Dodge Owners on Our Service
"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."
Gordon Harada"EZ Car Keys is by far the best locksmith I've ever used. Marco is prompt, prices are reasonable, and he has the experience that leaves you comfortable. We've used him twice and will never use anyone else!"
Traci Thomas"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
