First Generation (DN), Early
Pre-SKIM Dakotas (1995-1997) are mechanical only. No chip, no immobilizer, no programming. Cut the blank to the right code and the truck fires. Marco wraps these in under 10 minutes in any driveway.
First Generation (DN), Mid-Cycle
SKIM arrived for the 1998 model year with the right transponder family for the era. Blade still cuts the same way, but the head now holds a chip the SKIM checks on every ignition event. Marco runs both the cut and the OBD-II pair from a single San Diego driveway visit.
Second Generation (ND)
The third-generation Dakota carried the SKIM architecture forward through the 2011 model wrap. Standard double-sided blade, 3-button remote head where equipped, CR2032 battery, PIN-extracted OBD-II pairing. Marco still stocks the right blanks.

This key has a transponder chip inside the head that communicates with your Dakota's Sentry Key system. It needs to be both cut to your locks and electronically programmed to your truck before it will start the engine.

Can You Program a Dakota Key at Home?
Two working keys in hand on a 1998+ Dakota? Ignition cycling can add a third. First key ON for 3 seconds, OFF. Within 15 seconds, second key ON, wait for the chime. Third key within 50 seconds. Pre-1998 trucks have no chip, so no programming needed at all.
Holding one working remote? Re-pair just the remote-side buttons via a LOCK / UNLOCK / PANIC sequence with the key in RUN. That covers lock, unlock, panic. The transponder side is not touched.
