Transponder Programming Options We Offer

Prices below are typical ranges. Your exact cost depends on year, make, model, and whether all keys have been lost. We'll confirm the price before any work starts.

01

Fixed-Code Transponder Key

Car starts sometimes but not others, and you notice the security light flickering? A fixed-code chip losing its connection is usually the culprit.

EZ Car Keyz cutting a fixed-code transponder for a 2001 Ford Ranger at a home in Poway, California. The chip's static signal must match the stored ECU value exactly, so we identify the transponder type before cutting the blade and pairing.

Fixed-code transponder keys transmit a static ID that the immobilizer reads and compares against its stored value. The signal never changes, which makes programming straightforward, but the key still has to be cut to the correct bitting and the chip has to match the vehicle's stored code exactly.

02

Rolling-Code / Encrypted Key

Key starts the car nine times out of ten, but occasionally the immobilizer rejects it? Rolling-code keys can fall out of sync, and when they do, only a live OBD-II session can fix it.

Mobile OBD-II resync on a 2018 Kia Sportage at a residence in Imperial Beach, California.

Rolling-code and encrypted transponder keys generate a new signal every time the key is used. Programming one requires a live OBD-II session to synchronize the key's counter with the immobilizer module.

Carbon Chip (4C/4D) Key

Got a Toyota, Mazda, or Kia from the early 2000s with a plain-looking key? That key has a hidden transponder chip that hardware stores can't program.

Cutting and programming a 4C chip key for an early-2000s Toyota Corolla at a home in Coronado, California. The chip looks like nothing, but standard cutters cannot program it.

The 4C and 4D chips from Texas Instruments cover a massive range of Toyotas, Mazdas, and Kias built through the early 2000s. The 4C transmits a fixed code.

Philips Crypto Transponder

Hardware store cut your key perfectly, but the car won't start? If you drive a Honda, Nissan, or Hyundai, the Philips Crypto chip is almost certainly the missing piece.

EZ Car Keyz pairing a Philips ID47 Crypto chip for a 2018 Nissan Rogue in a driveway in Del Mar, California. The bitting was already correct from a prior shop, but the chip's encrypted handshake was never written to the immobilizer.

Philips ID46 and ID47 Crypto chips show up across a wide range of Honda, Nissan, and Hyundai models. The cryptographic challenge-response handshake inside these chips means a standard key machine can copy the blade all day long but will never touch the security layer.

Texas Instruments (TI) Chip Key

Driving a Subaru or newer Toyota? Your key uses a TI chip, and the exact variant determines how it gets programmed.

Mobile Texas Instruments DST+ programming for a 2020 Toyota Tacoma at a home in Solana Beach, California. The DST+ variant needs a different programming path than older DST keys, so we verify the exact TI sub-type before the job.

Texas Instruments makes several transponder variants: TI DST, DST+, and DST80. The programming method changes with each one. DST80, found in newer Toyotas and Subarus, requires the VVDI2 or Autel IM508 with a specific software license.

06

All-Keys-Lost Transponder Recovery

Every key is gone and the car is sitting dead? We build a new transponder key from scratch without towing the vehicle anywhere.

Recovery job on a 2017 Hyundai Elantra parked dead at a residence in Rancho Bernardo, California, with every key lost. PIN is pulled directly from the ECU, a fresh blade is cut from code, and the transponder is programmed from zero.

All-keys-lost means there's no original key to clone or reference. We extract the immobilizer's PIN code directly from the vehicle's ECU, generate a key code, cut a fresh blade, and program the transponder chip from zero.

Key Cut & Synced

Transponder chip paired to your immobilizer, key tested in the ignition, done.

Sound Familiar?

  • The engine cranks but refuses to start, and the security light on the dash won't turn off.
  • A hardware store cut you a perfect copy of your key but the car acts like it doesn't exist.
  • Your mechanic swapped the ECU or replaced the ignition module and now every key you own is rejected.
  • You bought a used car with one key and want a second transponder programmed before the original wears out or gets lost.
  • Your key has been intermittently failing to start the car, and replacing the battery didn't change anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is a transponder key?
A key with a small radio-frequency chip embedded in the plastic head. When you insert the key and turn the ignition, the chip sends a coded signal to the vehicle's immobilizer. If the code matches what the car expects, the engine starts. If it doesn't match, the starter is disabled. The chip is passive and doesn't need a battery. It's powered by the antenna coil in the steering column.
How do I know if my key has a transponder chip?
If your car was built after 1996, it almost certainly does. The easiest test: if a perfectly cut copy of your key turns the ignition but won't start the engine, the blade is right and the chip is missing or unprogrammed. You can also look at the key head. If it's thicker plastic than a standard metal key, there's a chip inside.
Why can't a hardware store program a transponder key?
Hardware store key machines can cut the physical blade by tracing the original. They can't communicate with your vehicle's immobilizer system to register a new chip. Some kiosk machines handle basic fixed-code cloning, but anything encrypted, rolling-code, or Philips Crypto requires a professional diagnostic tool plugged into the vehicle's OBD-II port.
What does "all keys lost" mean, and why does it cost more?
It means you have no working transponder key for the vehicle. Without an original to reference, we have to extract the immobilizer PIN from the ECU, generate the key data from scratch, cut a blade from a decoded lock or VIN pull, and program the chip with no shortcut. More labor, more equipment, more time.
Can you program a transponder key I bought online?
If it's the correct blank for your vehicle with the right chip type, yes. If the chip is wrong or the blank is incompatible, no amount of programming will make it work. Send us the part number before you buy and we'll tell you whether it's the right match. If you already have it, bring it and we'll check before we start.
Will programming a new transponder key delete my existing keys?
It depends on the vehicle. Some cars add new keys to the existing list. Others wipe the memory and only keep keys programmed in that session. We check your vehicle's protocol before we start and always ask you to bring every working key so nothing gets erased.
Does the transponder chip ever wear out?
The chip itself is passive and has no battery, so it doesn't degrade the way a fob battery does. What can fail is the antenna coil in the steering column that powers the chip, or physical damage to the key head that cracks the chip inside. If a key that's worked for years suddenly stops being recognized, the chip may have fractured from a drop or impact.
Is transponder programming the same as fob programming?
Related but different. Transponder programming writes a chip ID to the vehicle's immobilizer so the engine will start. Fob programming pairs a remote to the vehicle's body control module for keyless entry, lock, unlock, and trunk functions. Some keys have both a transponder chip and a remote fob, which means both systems need to be programmed. We handle both in the same visit when needed.
