2011 Dodge Dakota Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from Otay Ranch, maybe 11 at night. Guy had just gotten off a long shift and stopped at a spot in Chula Vista for a drink. Jacket off the back of his stool. Gone. Keys in the pocket.
He was an off-duty firefighter. Borrowed the bartender's phone, called the police, called his wife, then called me. His 2011 Dodge Dakota was sitting in the parking lot and the only key to it was wherever his jacket was.
His wife had already called the dealer while he was waiting for the police report. They told her they could order the key but it was going to be a few business days out, the truck would need to be towed in, and because the stolen key could still open the doors and potentially start the truck, they recommended rekeying the locks too. The combined estimate was steep. Tow not included.
I drove out that night.
All-keys-lost after a theft is a specific job. It's not the same as making a spare. The first thing I do is wipe the key memory entirely. Any key that was ever programmed to that truck, including the one in whoever's jacket, is erased. It cannot start the vehicle anymore. Then I program fresh keys from scratch.
On the 2011 Dakota, that means accessing the immobilizer system through the diagnostic port, clearing the stored key data, and registering new keys to the module. I cut the blade to match the locks, verified both keys started the truck and the remotes worked, and he drove home before midnight.
He asked me at the end if the stolen key could still open the locks mechanically. I told him honestly that yes, a cut blade will still turn a lock cylinder. If that was a concern, a rekey was an option, but he said the truck was older and he wasn't worried about it.
He got two working keys that night, the stolen one was dead to the ignition, and he skipped the tow, the wait, and the dealer bill.
