NATS is shorthand for Nissan Anti-Theft System, the immobilizer that Nissan has rolled out in various forms since the late 1990s. It exists to make sure that only a key whose chip has been digitally registered to the NATS module in your specific vehicle can start the engine. The complication for key replacement is that a key cut to the right blade profile will unlock the doors but the engine remains dead until the chip gets paired into NATS. Dealer pricing across San Diego County typically lands at $230 to $500 for a transponder key job and $330 to $1,000 for a smart key with programming.
