How the 350Z Key System Evolved
Z33 First Generation
On-board programming makes this one straightforward. Your early Z33 uses a standard transponder key with a Nissan NATS immobilizer chip, three buttons for lock, unlock, and trunk, and a CR2032 battery inside the fob. The VQ35DE engine era kept the key system simple and reliable, which means faster service and lower cost for you today.
Z33 Rev-Up Refresh
On-board programming works the same here as the earlier Z33. Nissan bumped the VQ35DE to 300 horsepower for the Rev-Up and 35th Anniversary trims, but the key system stayed identical: same NATS transponder chip, same three-button fob, same CR2032 battery. If your Z has the Rev-Up engine, your key replacement is no different from the base model.
Z33 Facelift
On-board programming still applies to the facelift Z33. Nissan gave you the VQ35HR with 306 horsepower and refreshed the exterior, but the key stayed consistent: NATS transponder, three-button remote head key, standard blade, CR2032 battery. The consistency across all Z33 years is actually great news because it keeps replacement costs down.
Identify the Key on Your 350Z
A standard metal key with a built-in remote for lock, unlock, and trunk. The transponder chip inside talks to your car's NATS system every time you turn the ignition.
Identical key to the base Z33. Same blade, same chip, same three-button remote. The Rev-Up upgrade was all engine, not key system.
Same key platform as every other Z33. Three buttons, standard blade, NATS transponder chip inside. Nissan kept it consistent across the entire 350Z production run.
How Much Does a 350Z Key Cost?
Price includes key blank, cutting, transponder programming, and remote sync, all done on-site.

350Z Key Issues We Knock Out in San Diego
CR2032 Fob Battery Quietly Killing Your Buttons
Most '350Z fob is broken' calls Marco takes in North Park and Hillcrest are a three-to-four-year CR2032. Pop with a coin, positive up, swap. Still dead? Dial (619) 876-1271.
Transponder Chip Failure
We check whether the chip in your key still talks to NATS. Moisture, drops, wear kill the transponder; 350Z cranks but won't start, security light solid or fast-blinking. We carry replacements and cut, program, test on-site.
Key Blade Wear and Breakage
The Z33 blade wears at the tip and stops engaging the ignition or door cylinder. Key turns hard, feels loose. Stop forcing it: a worn blade can snap inside. We cut a fresh blade matched to your locks.
NATS Immobilizer System Lockouts
Car won't start, security light flashing. On the 350Z that is often a NATS lockout, not battery or starter. The immobilizer can reject a good key after a glitch. Marco resets NATS on-site with the Autel IM608.
Can You Program the 350Z Key Yourself in San Diego?
You can knock out the remote buttons yourself with the ignition cycle method: lock all doors, insert and remove the key six times in ten seconds until the hazards flash, then turn to ACC and press a button on the fob. That handles lock, unlock, and trunk. But the transponder chip that actually lets the car start? That requires professional programming equipment. The remote is DIY; the ignition chip is not.

San Diego Trivia Worth Knowing
Worth knowing if you bought your 350Z used in San Diego: the Z33 platform underpins the Infiniti G35 too, so the same NATS architecture and key blanks Marco uses for your Z work on a G35 sedan or coupe parked next door. That cross-compatibility is why every Z33 we cut runs the exact same 4D-60 transponder programming sequence, regardless of whether you call it a Nissan or an Infiniti.
