Push-to-Start / Smart Key Options We Offer

Prices below are typical ranges. Your exact cost depends on year, make, model, and whether all keys have been lost. We'll confirm the price before any work starts.

01

Proximity Fob Replacement

Fob disappeared or died completely? The dealer quoted $400 and a week turnaround. We'll program a replacement at your location today.

Mobile smart-key replacement for a 2020 Nissan Rogue at a home in Coronado, California. VVDI Key Tool Plus handles the BCM authentication and writes the new fob token, then we confirm push-start, panic, and trunk release all work before leaving.

Proximity fob replacement means pairing a new remote transmitter to your vehicle's body control module for passive entry and push-button start. We connect to the OBD-II port using an Autel IM608 or VVDI Key Tool Plus, authenticate to the immobilizer, register the new fob token, and verify every function: walk-up unlock, push-start ignition, remote lock, panic, and trunk release.

02

Emergency Blade Cutting

Every smart fob has a hidden emergency blade inside the housing. If yours is missing, broken, or was never cut, a dead battery turns into a full lockout.

Mobile emergency-blade cut for a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe at a home in Del Mar, California. The owner's fob shell was missing the physical blade entirely, a common issue on used car buys.

The emergency blade is a small metal key tucked inside the fob, released by a button or sliding latch. It manually unlocks the driver's door when the fob battery dies or the vehicle's receiver fails. Many owners never check whether the blade is there, especially on used car purchases or aftermarket fob replacements where the slot is empty.

Smart Key Battery & Diagnostics

Fob works sometimes and doesn't other times? The battery might be fine. The problem could be an antenna, a receiver, or the fob's transmitter circuit.

Mobile smart-fob diagnostic on a 2019 Mazda CX-9 at a home in Rancho Bernardo, California. Under-load battery voltage checked good, but the in-cabin detection antenna for push-start wasn't reading cleanly.

Intermittent smart key problems aren't always a dead battery. We run a full diagnostic: fob battery voltage under load, fob transmitter output via frequency counter, low-frequency antenna reception at each door handle and trunk, and in-cabin detection antenna test for push-button start.

04

Smart Key System Reprogramming

Car battery died, alternator got replaced, or the BCM was swapped, and now none of your fobs are recognized? The fobs are fine. The system lost its pairing.

Mobile smart-key reprogramming for a 2018 Mazda Advanced Keyless system on a CX-30 at a home in Rancho Santa Fe, California, after a recent BCM replacement. The existing fobs dropped out during the swap and needed to be re-registered.

Smart key systems drop synchronization after a dead 12-volt battery, a body control module replacement, or a voltage spike from a bad jump-start. The car stops recognizing every fob you own even though the fobs themselves are undamaged.

05

All-Keys-Lost Smart Key Recovery

Zero working fobs, push-to-start vehicle, completely dead in a parking lot? The dealer says tow it in and wait. We build a new key from zero at your location.

Mobile all-keys-lost recovery on a 2019 Honda Pilot push-start vehicle stranded in a parking lot in Spring Valley, California. EEPROM is extracted from the immobilizer, a valid key token is computed, and a blank fob is written from zero.

All-keys-lost on a push-to-start vehicle is the most complex automotive locksmith job there is. No working fob means no authentication token to reference. We read the encrypted EEPROM data from the vehicle's immobilizer module, compute a valid cryptographic seed, generate a new key token, and write it to a blank fob.

06

Multi-Fob Smart Key Setup

Every driver gets their own fob, all programmed in one session so nobody's fob gets erased by somebody else's.

Mobile multi-fob smart-key session on a 2020 Ford Explorer at a driveway in Lemon Grove, California. Three fobs programmed together so all existing drivers keep push-start access. Single OBD-II session, zero risk of dropping any fob from the list.

Most smart key systems support three to eight fobs at once. Adding multiple fobs in a single session costs less per unit than programming them individually because the secure OBD-II connection and programming mode setup only happens once.

Sound Familiar?

  • Your only fob stopped being recognized and the push-button start won't engage no matter where you hold it.
  • You bought a used car with one fob and the previous owner never provided the second one they promised.
  • The car sat at the airport for ten days, the battery died, and now both fobs are completely unresponsive.
  • You pulled the emergency blade out of your fob and realized it was never actually cut to fit your door lock.
  • Your fob unlocks the doors from 20 feet away but the push-button start takes three or four attempts to fire inside the cabin.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a smart key system different from a regular transponder key?
A transponder key physically turns in an ignition cylinder and its chip talks to the immobilizer only at startup. A smart key never enters an ignition. It communicates wirelessly with antennas in the door handles, trunk, and cabin. The car detects the fob's presence passively, unlocks when you touch the handle, and starts when you press the button. The encryption is more complex, more antenna zones are involved, and the diagnostic process requires different platforms.
Why does smart key service cost more than regular key service?
The fob hardware is more expensive. The programming requires multi-layer encrypted authentication rather than a basic chip clone. And the verification is more extensive because we test passive entry at each door, push-button start, remote functions, and trunk release. More complexity at every step means higher cost compared to a traditional transponder key.
Can I buy a smart key fob online and have you program it?
Depends on the fob. Some aftermarket units work if the chip and frequency match your vehicle. Others are incompatible regardless of what the listing says. Send us the part number or link before you buy and we'll tell you if it's viable. If you already have it, bring it and we'll verify before starting. We also carry OEM-spec fobs on the truck if yours turns out to be wrong.
What if I lose my only fob for a push-to-start car?
That's an all-keys-lost recovery, the most expensive and time-intensive smart key service. Without a working fob, we bypass the immobilizer from scratch, generate a new cryptographic token, and build the fob from zero. A spare fob made while you still have a working one costs roughly half of what the emergency recovery costs after you lose everything.
My fob battery died. How do I start the car?
Most push-to-start vehicles have a backup: press the dead fob flat against the start button and a small inductive coil powers the chip directly, bypassing the need for radio transmission. Some manufacturers hide the reader in the center console or near the steering column. Call us and we'll walk you through your specific vehicle's backup method over the phone at no charge.
Will programming a new fob deactivate my old ones?
On many vehicles, the programming process clears the fob memory and only keeps fobs registered during that session. That's why we always ask you to bring every fob you own. We program the full set together so nothing gets erased. If you only have one fob left, we register the new one and re-register the existing one in the same session.
How can I tell if the problem is my fob or the car's antenna system?
If the fob fails on every door and the push-button start also won't engage, the fob is likely the issue. If it works on some doors but not others, or locks remotely but won't do passive entry, the vehicle's antenna or receiver is probably the weak point. We test both sides with a frequency counter and antenna diagnostics to isolate the failure before recommending any work.
Is the emergency blade inside my fob actually worth getting cut?
Absolutely. When the fob battery dies and the power locks are unresponsive, the emergency blade is the only way into the car without calling for a lockout. The blade costs under $150 and takes minutes to cut. The lockout service it prevents is a separate fee and a separate wait. Getting the blade cut now is the cheapest insurance against a dead-fob scenario.
