How G35 Key Security Evolved Year by Year
Transponder Key, 2003-2004
The 2003 and 2004 G35 sedan uses a standard transponder key paired with a separate remote fob. Programming goes through the OBD-II port, which keeps the process manageable, but you still need professional tools and a properly cut high-security blade to get there. A regular key shop cannot duplicate this blade off a blank. If all your keys are gone, we pull the key code and cut a fresh one, then register the transponder chip to the factory immobilizer right in your driveway.
Remote Head Key, 2005-2006
Nissan upgraded the immobilizer on 2005 and 2006 sedans and moved to a remote head key design, meaning the remote buttons and transponder chip live in one unit instead of two separate pieces. Programming still runs through the OBD-II port, but now requires a PIN code retrieved from the server. Lose this key and you have lost both your remote and your transponder in one shot, which is exactly the all-keys-lost situation we handle every week across San Diego County.
Remote Head Key, 2003-2007 Coupe
The coupe uses a remote head key across all five model years and shares the same transponder chip and immobilizer setup as the sedan. Sport trim coupes sometimes shipped with a leather-wrapped fob, but the electronics inside are identical to the base trim. OBD-II programming covers every coupe year, and losing your only key is a straight all-keys-lost job we can take care of on the spot wherever you are parked in San Diego County.
Flip Key, 2007 Sedan
The 2007 sedan represents a real step up in complexity. Infiniti moved to a flip key design where the blade folds into the fob body, and the transponder chip changed to a newer generation that requires server authentication through dealer-grade programming equipment. That means longer programming time and higher cost compared to the earlier years. We carry the credentials and tools to handle it on location, so a lost key on a 2007 sedan does not have to mean a tow.

Which Key Does Your G35 Use?
A metal key with a transponder chip inside the head. Your remote is a separate fob you carry alongside it. Both pieces together give you full lock, unlock, and start functionality. Years: 2003-2004 sedan.
Remote buttons and transponder chip built into one key head. One piece to carry instead of two. Requires a server PIN for transponder programming. Years: 2005-2006 sedan.
Same remote head key format as the 2005-2006 sedan, with a high-security blade and three-button remote built in. Sport trims may have a leather-wrapped fob, but the chip and programming process are the same across all coupe years. Years: 2003-2007 coupe.
The blade folds into the fob body when not in use. This is the most involved key in the G35 lineup, using a newer-generation transponder chip and requiring server-authenticated programming with dealer-grade equipment. Years: 2007 sedan.
Common G35 Key Problems We See in San Diego
Transponder Chip Failure
When your G35 cranks but refuses to fire, a lot of people assume the ignition is going bad. More often the transponder chip inside the key has simply worn out. Once the chip degrades, the factory immobilizer stops recognizing it and blocks the engine from starting. We test the chip first so you know exactly what you are dealing with. If it is dead, we cut and program a replacement key on the spot.
Immobilizer Sync Loss
A recently disconnected battery or a failed programming attempt with the wrong PIN can cause the factory immobilizer to lose sync with your registered keys on 2003 to 2006 G35s. The car cranks, the key looks fine, but nothing starts. We connect through the OBD-II port, re-register your keys with the correct credentials, and restore communication between the key and the immobilizer. This is one of the more common calls we get across San Diego County after a DIY battery swap.
Fob Button Wear
The rubber buttons on 2005 to 2007 G35 remote head keys break down with regular use. The contacts underneath wear thin until your lock and unlock buttons only respond under hard pressure, or stop responding entirely. If the key still starts the car, the transponder chip is fine and your issue is purely mechanical. You may only need a new shell, or we can cut a complete replacement key if the contacts are too far gone.
Broken High-Security Blade
The high-security blade on the G35 can snap at the base after years of daily use, and when it does, part of the blade ends up stuck in the ignition cylinder. Do not try to extract it yourself. Call (619) 876-1271 and we will come to you, pull the broken piece from the cylinder, cut a new blade by code, and program a fresh key. We handle broken-blade extractions throughout San Diego County.
Can You Program a G35 Key at Home?
There is a self-programming sequence for the remote lock and unlock functions that uses a series of ignition insertions. That part you can do yourself. The transponder chip that actually authorizes the engine to start is a different story. Pairing it to the factory immobilizer requires OBD-II programming with professional tools, and if all your keys are lost, there is no self-programming path at all.
The 2007 sedan has no self-programming option for any part of the key. The newer-generation transponder chip and the server authentication requirement mean both the remote and the transponder need dealer-grade programming equipment. There is no workaround for this one.

Did You Know?
The factory immobilizer built into the G35 traces its roots to a Nissan anti-theft initiative that cut vehicle theft rates by over 70 percent in Japan during the early 2000s. The same core technology that was protecting cars on Tokyo streets made its way into every G35 that came off the line. It is a big part of why the G35 remains one of the least-stolen sport sedans of its generation.
