The plastic gets brittle over time, especially in heat, and the shell starts splitting before the electronics have any problem at all.

The fix is a shell swap. We transfer your original circuit board into a new housing and cut a replacement emergency blade to match your vehicle. Because the programmed electronics move over intact, there's nothing to reprogram. The car sees the same board it already knows. It's one of the cleaner fixes in this line of work.

Start with the battery in the fob. The CR2032 in these wears down and the symptoms can look like a bigger problem before it fully dies. Swap it and test.

If the warning comes back with a fresh battery, try holding the fob directly against the start button while pressing the brake. The immobilizer antenna can read the fob at close range even when the battery is low or gone entirely. That's a built-in fallback on this system.

Still nothing? A few things can land you here. The fob can lose its pairing after the car's own battery goes fully dead. A corroded battery terminal in the car can cause enough of a voltage drop to confuse the system into thinking no key is present. And occasionally, a fob that sat unused for a long time just needs to be re-registered.

If the car still won't recognize the key after the basics, that's when it needs a proper diagnostic read before assuming the worst.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself or do I need a tech?

You need a tech. The 2006 G35 Intelligent Key system doesn't have a DIY button sequence or ignition-turn relearn for smart fobs. Registration goes through the diagnostic port with professional equipment. There's no workaround.

My G35 starts fine but the remote lock and unlock on the fob stopped working. Is the key going bad?

Not necessarily. On the 2006 G35, the transponder function and the remote functions run independently. The car starts because the immobilizer side is still paired and reading the fob correctly. The remote side failing on its own usually points to one of a few things: a weak battery that still has enough juice to talk to the immobilizer at close range but not enough to transmit the remote signal across the parking lot, a fob that's partially lost its remote pairing while keeping the start authorization, or worn contacts inside the fob itself.

First move is the battery. CR2032, fresh one. If the remote comes back, that was it. If the car still starts but the remote stays dead after a new battery, bring it in. That usually gets sorted without replacing the whole fob.
