EZ Car Keyz vs. the Dealer
Having a spare key made today costs a lot less than calling anyone for an all-keys-lost emergency down the road.
What a QX4 Key Actually Costs in San Diego
Every quoted price covers the key blank, cutting, transponder programming, and a full test before we leave your location. No surprise charges added at the end.
Which Key Does Your QX4 Use?
A metal key blade with a chip inside the head and three remote buttons built in. You turn it in the ignition like any traditional key, but the chip has to check in with the car's security system first. No chip signal, no start.
Same style as the earlier QX4, with a standard blade and a three-button remote head. The transponder chip inside is what authorizes the engine to start. Hand a locksmith a blank without a chip and all you have is something that turns the ignition without starting anything.
How QX4 Key Security Changed Over the Years
Transponder Key (1999-2000)
The 1999 and 2000 QX4 came with a standard transponder key and a three-button remote. The key carries a chip inside the head that must communicate with the factory immobilizer before the engine will run. Programming goes through the OBD-II port under the dash, and a trained tech can complete the whole job in under an hour. Nothing exotic about the process, but it does require the right equipment and someone who knows what they are doing.
Transponder Key (2001-2003)
Infiniti carried the same three-button transponder key design into the refreshed 2001 through 2003 QX4, pairing it with the updated 3.5L V6. The factory immobilizer remained in place, and the programming procedure is nearly identical to the earlier model years. One thing worth noting: the engine control module on these later trucks requires an exact transponder match, so we always pull the PIN code through OBD-II before cutting the blade. That verification step is what separates a correctly programmed key from one that cranks and dies.

QX4 Key Problems We See in San Diego
Transponder Chip Failure
The key goes in, it turns, and then either nothing happens or the engine cranks and immediately stalls. The transponder chip inside the key head has likely failed from age or physical damage. These chips have been in service for more than 20 years, and they do wear out. We cut and program a replacement transponder key on-site, usually in under an hour, so you are not waiting on a dealer appointment or a parts order.
Door Lock Actuator Failure
The small electric motor inside your door handle assembly that physically moves the lock mechanism can wear out over time. Humidity and age are the main culprits, particularly on 2001-2003 models. You might notice the power locks responding inconsistently, or one door not responding to the remote at all. This is a mechanical problem rather than a key or programming issue, but before you spend money on the wrong repair, we can confirm whether the fault is with your remote or the actuator itself.
Antenna Ring Corrosion
Before we suggest a new key, we check the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder. That small coil is what reads the transponder chip each time you insert the key. On 1999-2002 QX4s, this ring can corrode over time and stop communicating even with a perfectly good key. If the security light is blinking and a known working key still will not start the vehicle, the antenna ring is the most likely cause. Identifying that early saves you from buying a key you do not need.
Remote Battery Drain
A dead battery gets mistaken for a failed remote more often than you would expect. The QX4 remote takes a CR2032 battery, and repeated accidental button presses in a pocket or bag will drain it quickly. Swap in a fresh name-brand CR2032 before assuming anything is broken. If the remote still does not lock or unlock after a fresh battery, give us a call and we will reprogram it on-site in San Diego County.
Can You Program a QX4 Key at Home?
For the 1999-2000 QX4, you can program the remote lock and unlock functions yourself using a key-cycle procedure. The transponder chip that actually allows the engine to start is a different matter entirely. That part requires professional OBD-II programming, and there is no workaround for it.
The 2001-2003 models work the same way. Remote button functions can be set up by cycling the key in the ignition the required number of times until the hazard lights flash to confirm. The transponder chip still needs professional tools to sync with the factory immobilizer. That step is not something dealer-grade programming equipment can be replaced with a YouTube video.

Did You Know?
The QX4's factory immobilizer was among the earlier Nissan-based systems to use encrypted transponder chip technology in an SUV. While many competitors in the late 1990s were still relying on basic resistor keys for theft deterrence, Infiniti was already requiring a chip-authenticated signal before the engine would run. For a truck in this class and price range at that time, that was a meaningful step forward in security.
