1997 Infiniti QX4
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: I'm worried someone else has a copy of my key. Can you make sure old keys won't work anymore?

On a 1997 QX4, the key is purely mechanical. If you want to make copied keys unusable, the real solution is rekeying the locks. A locksmith recuts the lock cylinders to a new key profile, and any existing copies made to the old cut simply won't turn anymore. It's a legitimate security move if a key went missing under bad circumstances. We can do that on site.

Q: Does my 1997 Infiniti QX4 have a hidden emergency blade inside the key?

No. The 1997 QX4 predates the intelligent key fob era entirely. Your key is already the mechanical blade, there's nothing hidden inside a fob housing because there is no fob. The key you hold is the key. If it's lost, a locksmith decodes the lock and cuts a new one. If it's worn, same process.

Q: My 1997 QX4 key turns hard and feels like it's wearing out the ignition. Is that a key problem or an ignition problem?

Usually both, working together to make each other worse. A worn key blade develops rounding on the cuts over years of use. That worn key gets forced through the ignition tumblers repeatedly, and eventually the tumblers start wearing to match the bad key rather than the correct profile. By the time owners notice stiffness or intermittent no-start, the key and cylinder are often both degraded.

Q: Can a locksmith make a key for my QX4 if I have zero keys and can't get into the car?

Yes, that's a standard all-keys-lost job on this vehicle. A locksmith picks or decodes the door lock to get you in, then reads the lock to determine the correct key cut. From there a replacement key gets cut on site. The whole thing happens in your driveway or parking lot in Downtown Escondido without towing anywhere.

1997 Infiniti QX4 Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from an oral surgeon with an office near Downtown Escondido. He'd lost his only key to a 1997 Infiniti QX4 he kept as a weekend vehicle.

Before he even said hello, he told me he'd already looked up my BSIS license number, LCO#6792, on the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services website. Verified the background checks, the insurance, the registration. Then he read the reviews. Then he watched a couple of YouTube videos. By the time he picked up the phone, he just needed to know when I could show up.

I drove to him. He was between patients, standing in the parking lot in scrubs.

The QX4 sat there, locked, no key anywhere. I decoded the lock cylinder on site and cut a replacement key blade to match. That was it. No module access, no diagnostic port, no countdown timer. He turned it in the ignition on the first try and looked almost disappointed by how fast it went.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a wait and a tow. He said the quote alone made him start searching for alternatives.

He got what he needed on his lunch break, for a fraction of what they wanted, without moving the vehicle an inch.

Look up LCO#6792 if you want. Read the reviews. That's all I can tell you.

Infiniti QX4 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle a lost key on my 1997 Infiniti QX4?▼

Call a mobile locksmith instead of arranging a tow to the dealer. On a 1997 QX4, a replacement key is a cut metal key, nothing more. A mobile locksmith can decode your lock cylinder or use the key code on site and cut a working key right there. No tow, no waiting room, no dealer markup. Getting a spare cut at the same time is worth doing so you never end up in this spot again.
