Transponder Key Era (1996-1999)
When Infiniti launched the I30, it was among the earlier luxury sedans to ship with a factory immobilizer as standard equipment. The key for these years is a plain metal blade with a transponder chip buried inside the plastic head. There are no buttons, no battery, nothing to indicate it is anything more than a basic key. But that chip has to communicate with the car's computer every time you turn the ignition. Without a correctly programmed chip, the engine will crank and refuse to start. Remote Head Key Era (2000-2001)
For the 2000 and 2001 model years, Infiniti combined the transponder and the keyless entry remote into a single remote head key. You get three buttons for lock, unlock, and panic, and the fob runs on a CR2025 battery. The factory immobilizer also received an update on these models, and programming now requires a PIN code in addition to dealer-grade programming equipment. Can You Program an I30 Key Yourself?
For 1996-1999 models, there is a partial DIY path. You can pair the keyless entry remote using an ignition cycling method: lock the doors, cycle the key in and out of the ignition six to ten times within ten seconds until the hazard lights flash, then press a button on the remote. That pairs the remote buttons only. The transponder chip inside the key still needs professional programming equipment. The DIY sequence will not make the engine start if the chip is not already matched to the car.
The 2000-2001 models follow the same pattern. The ignition cycling procedure can re-pair the remote buttons after a battery swap, but it does not touch the transponder. On top of that, the updated factory immobilizer on these years requires a PIN code, so a brand new key needs professional programming equipment no matter what.
