Key Fob Battery Service Options We Offer

Prices below are typical ranges. Your exact cost depends on year, make, model, and whether all keys have been lost. We'll confirm the price before any work starts.

01

CR2032 / CR2025 Battery Swap

Fob barely works unless you're standing on top of the car? That's a dying CR2032 or CR2025, and the fix takes five minutes.

Mobile CR2025 swap on a 2019 Subaru Outback fob at a home in Vista, California. The 2.5-millimeter 160 mAh cell was barely pushing a signal past the bumper. New cell in, full-range function restored. Ten-minute curbside job.

The CR2032 and CR2025 are the most common fob batteries in circulation. The CR2032 (3.2mm thick, 220mAh) powers fobs for Toyota, Honda, Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, and dozens of other makes. The CR2025 (2.5mm thick, 160mAh) appears in many Mazda, Subaru, and some BMW fobs.

CR1632 / CR1620 Battery Swap

Small fob, small battery, shorter lifespan. If your compact fob or flip key remote went dead, a CR1632 or CR1620 swap fixes it.

Mobile CR1620 swap on an older Honda flip key at a home in San Marcos, California. The 68 mAh cell was completely drained, as compact-fob batteries usually are by the two-year mark. Swapped and tested at the car, mission accomplished.

The CR1632 and CR1620 are 16mm lithium cells used in compact fobs and flip key remotes. The CR1632 (120mAh) shows up in many Lexus smart keys, some Mazda flip keys, and several Subaru fobs. The CR1620 (68mAh) appears in older Honda flip keys and some Toyota remotes.

Fob Case & Button Repair

Cracked housing, dead buttons, broken key loop? The electronics inside are probably fine. We swap them into a fresh case instead of making you buy a whole new fob.

Mobile fob rebuild on a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado at a home in Encinitas, California. The housing cracked from a parking-lot drop, one button pad had gone dead, and the flip blade pivot was bent.

Fob cases absorb daily abuse. Dropped on parking lot asphalt, crushed in bags, soaked in sweat at the gym, coated in sunscreen at the beach. The most common failures are cracked housings that let moisture reach the circuit board, rubber button pads that lose their conductive coating, and snapped blade pivots on flip keys.

Battery + Reprogramming Combo

Replaced the battery yourself and the fob still won't work? The fob lost sync while the old battery was dead. We fix both the power and the pairing in one visit.

Mobile combo service on a 2018 Mazda Advanced Keyless system fob at a home in La Mesa, California. Old battery had been dead long enough for the vehicle to forget the fob.

When a fob battery dies completely and stays dead for an extended period, some vehicles drop the fob from their recognition list. This happens frequently on Nissan Intelligent Key systems, Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry, and certain Ford and Lincoln models.

Multi-Fob Battery Service

Three cars in the driveway, six fobs in the drawer, all dying at the same time? We swap every one of them in a single stop.

Mobile multi-fob battery swap across four household fobs at a home in Santee, California. Every fob had been losing range at the same rate because they all got fresh cells from the same batch two years back.

Household fob batteries tend to die in waves because they were all installed around the same time. One fob gets weak, then the next, then the third. Instead of making three separate trips to the dealer or auto parts store, we swap every fob in the household in one mobile visit.

Fob Signal Diagnostics

New battery and the fob still isn't right? The issue might be a cracked solder joint, a dead transmitter, or RF interference, not the battery.

Mobile fob signal diagnostic on a 2020 Ram 1500 remote at a driveway in National City, California. Fresh battery didn't fix the unresponsive remote, and analysis revealed RF interference from a nearby aftermarket alarm.

When a fresh battery doesn't fix the problem, the failure is either electronic or environmental. We use a frequency counter and signal analyzer to verify the fob is transmitting on the correct frequency (315 MHz on most US fobs, 433 MHz on some newer models). If the fob transmits but the car ignores it, we check for RF interference.

Sound Familiar?

  • Your fob worked fine last week and now it only responds when you press the button with the fob touching the car.
  • You swapped the battery at home and the fob still won’t work, and now the case has a crack in it from the screwdriver you used to pry it open.
  • Every fob in the household started dying within the same two-week window and you’re tired of making individual trips to the auto parts store.
  • The fob housing cracked from a drop at the gym and you can see the green circuit board through the split.
  • Your fob works great in your garage but stops responding every time you park at the office or the mall.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my fob needs a battery or something more serious?
Gradual range loss over weeks or months is a battery issue. If the fob dies suddenly with no warning, or a fresh battery doesn't restore function, it may be a desync, a circuit board fault, or a transmitter failure. We diagnose before recommending anything so you're paying for the right fix.
Can I replace the battery myself without breaking the fob?
You can if you use the correct pry point and the right amount of force. Most fobs have a designated slot where a coin or thin tool separates the two halves cleanly. Using a flathead screwdriver in the wrong spot cracks the seam or breaks the internal clips. If you're not confident with small electronics, having us do it avoids a case replacement on top of the battery cost.
How often should I replace my fob battery?
CR2032 batteries last two to four years. CR2025 cells are similar. Compact CR1632 and CR1620 batteries last 12 to 18 months due to lower capacity. Proximity fobs that passively communicate with the car drain faster than basic remotes that only transmit on button press. Heat and coastal humidity also shorten battery life.
Will a new battery erase my fob's programming?
On most vehicles, no. The battery powers the transmitter but doesn't affect the chip or the stored pairing. If the old battery was dead for an extended period, some vehicles desync the fob, which requires reprogramming. That's a quick resync, not a full reprogram from scratch.
Can a cracked fob case be fixed, or do I need a new fob?
Fixable almost every time. The case is just the housing. The electronics, chip, and contacts inside are usually undamaged. We transfer everything into a new OEM-spec shell. No reprogramming needed because the electronics stay the same. It's significantly cheaper than buying and programming a new fob.
Why does my fob work at home but not at certain locations?
RF interference. Fobs transmit on 315 MHz or 433 MHz, and some environments produce enough interference on those frequencies to block the signal. Dense commercial areas, military installations, certain LED lighting systems, and heavy wireless deployments can all interfere. If the fob works consistently at home but fails at a specific location, the problem is environmental, not hardware.
Do you carry all fob battery sizes?
We stock CR2032, CR2025, CR1632, and CR1620 on every truck. Those four cover the vast majority of fobs on the road. For rare models with unusual batteries, we confirm availability before dispatch. All our cells have verified manufacture dates, so you're getting fresh stock, not batteries that have been losing charge on a shelf for years.
When is it better to just buy a new fob instead of fixing the old one?
Only when the circuit board itself is damaged beyond repair, which is rare. Battery swap is $25 to $50. Case replacement is $35 to $85. Even both together cost less than a new fob with programming, which starts around $125 and goes up from there. We always try the cheapest fix first and only recommend a new fob if the electronics are genuinely dead.
