Key Fob Battery Service Options We Offer

Prices below are typical ranges. Your exact cost depends on year, make, model, and whether all keys have been lost. We'll confirm the price before any work starts.

01

CR2032 / CR2025 Battery Swap

Fob range shrinking to arm's length? Buttons only work when you press them against the car? A dying CR2032 or CR2025 is almost always the problem.

CR2032 swap on a 2018 Toyota RAV4 fob at a driveway in Santa Barbara, California. The three-millimeter lithium cell is the most common fob battery in circulation, and a fresh cell restored range instantly.

The CR2032 and CR2025 are the two most common key fob batteries on the road. The CR2032 (3.2mm thick, 220mAh) powers fobs for Toyota, Honda, Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, and dozens more. The CR2025 (2.5mm thick, 160mAh) shows up in many Mazda, Subaru, and some BMW fobs.

CR1632 / CR1620 Battery Swap

Compact fob completely dead? Smaller batteries die faster, often within 12 to 18 months. A quick swap brings it back.

CR1632 swap on a 2017 Lexus NX smart key fob at a driveway in Oxnard, California. The sixteen-millimeter cell has a shorter lifespan than the bigger CR2032, and the fob had gone quiet mid-week.

The CR1632 and CR1620 are smaller-diameter lithium cells (16mm versus the standard 20mm) used in compact key fobs and flip key remotes. The CR1632 (120mAh) appears in many Lexus smart keys, some Mazda flip keys, and several Subaru fobs.

Fob Case & Button Repair

Cracked shell, mushy buttons, or a broken key loop? We move your electronics into a fresh case so you don't have to buy and program a whole new fob.

Fob case and button repair on a 2016 Ford F-150 remote at a residence in Thousand Oaks, California. The housing had cracked at the split line letting moisture into the PCB, and two buttons had lost their conductive pad coating.

Key fob cases take constant abuse. Dropped on asphalt, sat on in back pockets, crushed in purses, exposed to sweat and sunscreen. The most common failures are cracked housings that expose the circuit board to moisture, rubber button pads that lose their conductive backing, and snapped key blade pivots on flip keys.

04

Battery + Reprogramming Combo

Swapped the battery yourself and the fob still won't respond? A battery that sat dead too long can desync the fob from the car. We fix both in one visit.

Battery-plus-reprogramming combo on a 2017 Nissan Altima Intelligent Key at a driveway in Simi Valley, California. The fob dropped from the vehicle's recognition list after sitting with a dead cell for months.

When a key fob battery dies completely and stays dead for an extended period, some vehicles drop the fob from their paired device list. This is especially common on Nissan Intelligent Key systems, Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry, and certain Ford and Lincoln models.

Multi-Fob Battery Service

Two cars, four fobs, all dying at the same time? We swap every battery in the household in a single visit instead of three separate trips.

Multi-fob battery service for a household fleet at a home in Camarillo, California: six fobs across three vehicles, all installed around the same time and dying in waves. Every coin cell swapped, every fob tested at its vehicle, in a single stop.

Most households with multiple vehicles end up with a drawer full of fobs, and the batteries in all of them were probably installed around the same time. That means they die in clusters. One week the Toyota fob gets weak, the next week the Honda fob follows, and by the third week the Hyundai is dead too.

Fob Signal Diagnostics

Fresh battery, fob still isn't working right? The problem might be the circuit board, the antenna, or RF interference, not the battery.

Fob signal diagnostic on a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee remote at a home in Moorpark, California, after a fresh battery didn't help. Frequency counter confirmed a dead 433 MHz transmitter output, so the fob itself was at fault rather than the vehicle.

When a new battery doesn't fix a key fob, the issue is either electronic or environmental. We use a frequency counter and signal analyzer to verify the fob is actually transmitting on the correct frequency (most US fobs use 315 MHz, some newer models use 433 MHz).

Sound Familiar?

  • Your fob worked fine last week but now you have to stand right next to the car and press the button three times before anything happens.
  • You replaced the battery at home and the fob still doesn’t work, and now you’re not sure if you broke something opening the case.
  • The fob housing cracked from a drop on the driveway and you can see the circuit board through the gap.
  • You have three vehicles in the household and all the fobs started dying within the same month.
  • Your fob works perfectly in the morning but stops responding after the car sits in the sun all afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my fob needs a new battery or something more serious?
If the fob range has been gradually shrinking over weeks or months, it's almost certainly the battery. If the fob died suddenly with no warning, or if a new battery doesn't restore function, the issue may be a desync, a circuit board problem, or a failed transmitter. We diagnose before recommending any fix so you're not paying for the wrong service.
Can I replace the fob battery myself?
You can, but the risk is cracking the case. Most fob housings are held together by snap clips that require a specific pry point and the right amount of force. Using a flathead screwdriver or a knife blade often cracks the seam or breaks the clips. If you're comfortable with small electronics, it's doable. If you've never opened one before, having us do it avoids a $75 case replacement on top of a $3 battery.
How often do fob batteries need to be replaced?
Standard CR2032 batteries last two to four years depending on usage. Compact CR1632 and CR1620 cells last 12 to 18 months because of lower capacity. Proximity fobs that communicate passively with the car drain faster than basic remote fobs that only transmit when you press a button. Environmental factors matter too: extreme heat and salt air both shorten battery life.
Will replacing the battery erase my fob's programming?
On most vehicles, no. Swapping the battery doesn't touch the chip or the pairing. However, if the old battery was completely dead for an extended period, some vehicles desync the fob from the system. That's the battery plus reprogramming scenario, and we handle it in one visit. The fob doesn't need to be reprogrammed from scratch; it just needs to be re-registered with the vehicle's receiver.
Can you fix a fob with a cracked case, or do I need a whole new fob?
Almost always fixable. A cracked case means the housing is damaged, but the circuit board, chip, and battery contacts inside are usually fine. We transfer the internals into a new OEM-spec shell. No reprogramming needed because the electronics don't change. It's faster and cheaper than buying and programming an entirely new fob.
Why does my fob work in some locations but not others?
RF interference. Key fobs transmit on either 315 MHz or 433 MHz, and certain environments create enough interference on those frequencies to block the signal. Dense commercial wireless zones, military communication equipment, agricultural telemetry, and even some LED lighting systems can interfere. If the fob works consistently at home but fails at a specific location, the environment is the problem, not the fob.
Do you stock all battery types, or might you need to order one?
We carry CR2032, CR2025, CR1632, and CR1620 cells on every truck. Those four sizes cover the vast majority of fobs on the road. On rare models that use an unusual battery, we confirm availability before dispatch. All our batteries have verified manufacture dates so you're getting fresh cells, not stock that's been sitting on a shelf losing charge.
Is it worth replacing the battery on an old fob, or should I just buy a new one?
If the electronics still work, replacing the battery is always the better value. A battery swap is $25 to $45. A new fob with programming starts at $125 and goes up from there. Even if the case needs replacing too, the total cost of a battery swap plus case repair is still well under the price of a new fob. The only reason to buy a new fob is if the circuit board itself is damaged beyond repair.
