EEPROM / ECU Programming Options We Offer

Prices below are typical ranges. Your exact cost depends on year, make, model, and whether all keys have been lost. We'll confirm the price before any work starts.

01

EEPROM Read & Write

The OBD-II port rejected the programming attempt? That means the standard path is closed. We go to the chip directly.

Mobile EEPROM session on a 2019 Audi Q5 at a home in Poway, California, after standard OBD programming hit a security wall. CGDI tooling reads the chip, backs up the data, and writes the new key credentials to silicon.

EEPROM read and write accesses the physical memory chip inside the immobilizer module, extracts the existing security data, creates a verified backup, and writes new key credentials directly to the silicon. We use the Yanhua Mini ACDP and CGDI programmers for chip-level access.

02

ECU Reflash / Virgin Reset

Module corrupted from a bad programming attempt, a power surge, or an aftermarket alarm conflict? We reset it to factory state without replacing the hardware.

Mobile ECU reflash on a 2018 Mercedes GLC at a residence in Imperial Beach, California, after an aftermarket alarm corrupted the immobilizer data. VVDI2 returned the unit to virgin factory state, reopening the OBD-II programming path.

A corrupted ECU or immobilizer module locks out all key registration. No new key can be added through the OBD-II port because the security layer is stuck in a fault condition. Our reflash service uses AVDI/Abrites and VVDI2 platforms to return the module to its virgin factory state, which reopens the standard OBD-II programming path.

03

All-Keys-Lost Advanced Recovery

Zero keys, the OBD-II port is locked out, and the dealer says replace the module for $2,000. We recover at the chip level for a fraction of that.

Mobile advanced all-keys-lost on a 2020 Volkswagen Atlas at a driveway in Coronado, California, with the dealer quoting two thousand for a new module. Immobilizer pulled, EEPROM read, crypto data extracted, fresh credentials written.

All-keys-lost on a vehicle with an advanced immobilizer that blocks standard programming is the highest-complexity automotive locksmith job. No key exists to authenticate, and the OBD-II port won’t accept registration without one. We remove the immobilizer control unit, read the security chip with the Yanhua ACDP or CGDI, extract the PIN and crypto data, and write new key credentials directly to the EEPROM.

Immobilizer Module Repair

Module has a hardware fault? Replacing the entire unit isn’t the only option. We diagnose and repair at the component level.

Mobile immobilizer module repair on a 2017 Land Rover Discovery at a driveway in Del Mar, California. A failed driver chip on the board was causing random no-starts.

Sometimes the immobilizer module has a physical defect: a blown driver chip, a corroded solder joint, a damaged EEPROM cell. No amount of reprogramming fixes a hardware failure. The module needs board-level repair. Rather than swapping the entire unit at dealer cost ($1,500 to $3,000 or more), we diagnose the failure point using oscilloscopes and diagnostic scanners, then repair or replace the specific component on the board.

05

Dashboard / BCM Key Programming

On Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and some GM vehicles, key data lives in the instrument cluster or body control module, not a standalone immobilizer. Different module, different procedure.

Mobile dashboard programming on a 2015 Dodge Durango at a residence in Solana Beach, California. Chrysler-family vehicles store key tokens in the instrument cluster on this generation, so we program through that module directly.

Certain platforms store key security data in the instrument cluster or BCM rather than a dedicated immobilizer unit. When standard programming fails on these vehicles, we access the specific module where the data actually lives.

Luxury & European Vehicle EEPROM

BMW CAS/FEM, Mercedes EIS/ESL, Audi IMMO5/MQB, Jaguar/Land Rover KVM. If your luxury vehicle’s immobilizer needs chip-level work, we have the platform-specific tools and the protocol knowledge to handle it.

Mobile European luxury EEPROM on a 2019 Mercedes S-Class at a driveway in Rancho Bernardo, California, with EIS/ESL module work.

European luxury immobilizer systems are the most sophisticated in the industry. Each manufacturer runs proprietary security with multiple encrypted layers, inter-module authentication, and anti-tamper protections that reject generic diagnostic tools. BMW’s CAS and FEM modules require ISN extraction.

Sound Familiar?

  • A locksmith tried standard programming and the vehicle rejected the attempt, and now the system won’t accept any keys at all.
  • The dealer quoted over $2,000 to replace the immobilizer module and you want to know if a reset or repair is possible first.
  • You lost every key on a newer or European vehicle and were told by another locksmith that the security system is too advanced for them.
  • An electrical surge, a bad jump-start, or a failed aftermarket alarm install corrupted the immobilizer, and now the car won’t start with any key.
  • Your vehicle’s ECU or BCM was replaced at a shop, and now none of the original keys are recognized because the new module came unprogrammed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is EEPROM programming and how is it different from standard key programming?
Standard programming communicates with the vehicle through the OBD-II diagnostic port using software commands. EEPROM programming physically accesses the memory chip inside the immobilizer module and reads or writes security data directly on the silicon. It’s the deeper access method, used when the OBD-II path is blocked, corrupted, or not supported for the procedure needed.
Why would standard OBD-II programming fail?
Newer vehicles restrict what can be done through the port to prevent unauthorized key registration. A previous failed attempt can put the module into a permanent fault state. Corrupted security data blocks new writes. Some all-keys-lost situations on advanced platforms require an authenticated key before the port will accept a new registration, and no key exists. EEPROM access bypasses all of these barriers.
Is EEPROM work safe for my vehicle?
Yes, when performed by a technician who knows the platform. We create a full backup of all existing data before writing anything new. Engine calibration, emissions settings, and all non-security data remain untouched. Only the key-security layer changes. The backup allows full restoration if anything interrupts the process.
Why does this cost more than regular key programming?
The equipment investment is significantly higher: AVDI/Abrites, Yanhua ACDP, CGDI, manufacturer-specific adapters, and the associated software licenses. The procedures take longer because chip-level work requires extraction, backup, write, and multi-step verification. And the expertise threshold is higher because each manufacturer’s immobilizer architecture is different, and an incorrect write has more serious consequences than a failed OBD-II attempt.
Can any locksmith do EEPROM work?
Very few can. Most automotive locksmiths carry OBD-II programming tools and don’t have the equipment or training for chip-level access. EEPROM work requires specialized programmers, manufacturer-specific adapters, and detailed knowledge of each platform’s security protocol. That’s why most locksmiths refer these jobs to the dealer, and the dealer quotes module replacement.
Which vehicles typically need EEPROM-level service?
European luxury brands are the most common: BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Jaguar, Land Rover. Their immobilizer systems are the most restrictive. We also see it on newer domestic and Japanese vehicles with tightened security, any vehicle with a corrupted module from an electrical event, and all-keys-lost situations on platforms where the OBD-II path requires an existing key to authenticate.
Will the immobilizer module need to be physically removed?
Depends on the procedure. EEPROM read/write and module repair require physical access to the board and sometimes removal. ECU reflash can often be done through the diagnostic port without removing anything. Dashboard/BCM programming is typically performed in-vehicle. We explain exactly what’s involved before starting.
How do I know if I need EEPROM service or if standard programming will work?
You don’t need to figure that out. Tell us the vehicle and the situation, and we determine the correct method. If OBD-II programming will solve it, we do that first because it’s faster and cheaper. EEPROM-level work only happens when the simpler path is genuinely not an option. We don’t upsell the premium service when a basic approach gets the job done.
