EZ Car Keyz vs. the Infiniti Dealer
Our work carries the same warranty as the dealer's. What you skip is the tow truck, the service-lane wait, and roughly half the cost.
Which Key Does Your QX80 Use?
A proximity smart key with push-button start. Keep it in your pocket and the QX80 detects it at the door and the ignition. A laser-cut emergency blade folds inside the fob so you can still get into the vehicle manually if the battery goes dead.
Same smart key design as the earlier QX80, carried straight through the facelift. Three buttons, push-button start, and a laser-cut emergency blade hidden inside the fob. The exterior of the SUV changed; the key experience did not.
How Infiniti QX80 Key Technology Changed Over the Years
Smart Key - First Generation (2014-2020)
From the 2014 model year forward, the QX80 came with a proximity smart key and push-button start. The fob carries a transponder chip inside and communicates with the factory immobilizer over a radio frequency. A laser-cut emergency blade is hidden inside the fob for manual door entry when the battery dies. Programming this key requires OBD-II access and a dealer-grade PIN code, so there is no shortcut or self-programming path for owners.
Smart Key - Refreshed Generation (2021-2024)
Infiniti updated the QX80's styling and interior for 2021, but the key system carried over without change. You still get a three-button proximity smart key with push-button start and a hidden laser-cut emergency blade. The transponder chip, the factory immobilizer pairing process, and the OBD-II programming requirement are all identical to the earlier generation. If you already know the pre-facelift key, you know this one.

Common QX80 Key Problems We See in San Diego
Smart Key Battery Drain
Your QX80's proximity smart key is in constant low-level radio contact with the vehicle, and that ongoing communication burns through a CR2032 faster than most owners expect. If the battery is dying every few months, try keeping the fob away from the vehicle overnight. The proximity sensors will keep searching for the key even when you are parked in your driveway in Chula Vista or Mission Valley, and that shortens battery life noticeably.
Transponder Programming Failures
When a freshly cut key refuses to start the QX80, the transponder chip inside the blank is usually the first thing to check. The factory immobilizer is selective about chip quality, and low-grade aftermarket chips get rejected more often than not. We stock OEM-grade blanks on every service call throughout San Diego County, so if a discount key shop left you with a key that cuts and turns but will not start the car, we can fix it on the spot.
Emergency Blade Wear
The laser-cut emergency blade inside your fob is precision work, and those tight tolerances wear down with regular use. When the blade starts sticking in the door cylinder or only turns with effort, it is time for a fresh cut. We cut a new blade at your location from the original key code, not a copy traced from a worn key, so the new one fits the way it is supposed to.
Can You Program a QX80 Key at Home?
Not for any QX80 in the 2014-2020 range. The factory immobilizer requires OBD-II diagnostic equipment and a dealer-level PIN code to register a new key. There is no ignition sequence, no button combination, and no on-board menu that bypasses that requirement.
The same holds for 2021-2024 models. Infiniti did not introduce any owner-accessible programming option with the refresh. A new smart key still has to be registered through professional tools with PIN access, whether the work is done at a dealer or by a mobile locksmith like us.
