Sunday morning in Scripps Ranch, out in the lot next to a yoga studio. The owner had just finished teaching her first class of the day and walked out to her 2015 Infiniti QX80 to find nothing working. Door handles not responding, push-button start ignoring the fob completely, no lock or unlock. The Infiniti dealer nearby was closed until Monday. Her next class was in two hours.

It was fully dead, which explained the no-response situation, but swapping the battery alone didn't bring the fob back online. The fob itself had given up. On this vehicle, the smart key system talks to the body control module through a dedicated antenna network, and when it loses communication entirely, a new battery isn't enough. You need the replacement fob programmed in.
I had the right blank with me. Connected to the OBD port, ran the add-a-key sequence, got the new fob registered to her vehicle. Then the part I don't skip: walking every function. Lock, unlock, push-button start, liftgate, and range check from across the lot. Everything came back solid.
She made it home, changed, and was back in time for her second class. The dealer would have had her towing the QX80 in Monday morning and waiting on a parts order. That wasn't an option she had.
