Yes for the 2008 through 2022 range, which is where most Audi work lands. The procedure reads the BCM2 EEPROM or pulls the security PIN through OBD-II using a VVDI2 or an Autel IM608. The Q5, Q7, A4 B8/B9, A5, A6, and A7 all stay mobile, no tow involved. Past 2020 the component protection layer thickens, and certain ECU configurations route through dealer ODIS rather than our mobile tools. That call gets made on the phone before dispatch, never after a wasted trip.

Advanced Key is Audi's marketing label for the hands-free proximity entry and push-button start system. The low-frequency sensors live inside the door handles and the trunk, sensing the fob within about a five-foot radius and unlocking on approach. Once in the cabin, the brake-and-push sequence cranks the engine without anyone ever pulling the key out of a pocket. Programming a replacement Advanced Key requires OBD-II tools that can sync with the KESSY proximity module, and that is what runs on every A4, A5, A6, Q5, Q7, and Q8 service call with this system.

Dealer numbers break out by model class. A4 and A5 sit in the $350 to $650 range. Q5 lands at $500 to $850. Q7 and Q8 push $550 to $900 or higher. That split behavior is the fingerprint of a two-circuit fob. On B7 A4 and similar mid-2000s Audis, the transponder chip that handles immobilizer authentication is separate from the radio circuit that runs the lock and unlock buttons. The engine starts because the chip is fine. The buttons fail because the radio circuit is not. The cause is almost always one of three things: a dying battery, a desync that followed a battery swap, or a failed fob circuit board. Diagnosis at the car decides whether a resync clears it or a fob replacement is the answer.

Step one: swap the CR2032 in the fob. No reprogramming needed after the cell change. Step two if the fresh cell does not solve it: the emergency start procedure for your specific model year. The fob either gets held against the key symbol on the steering column, dropped into the cupholder backup pocket, or inserted directly into a dashboard slot, depending on which generation the car is. Step three if neither of those gets the engine running: the problem is no longer the fob and the antenna or receiver module in the car needs diagnosis on a service call.

Yes. Any Audi with passive keyless entry is susceptible to relay attacks, where a pair of signal amplifiers extends the live fob proximity signal from inside the house out to wherever the car is parked. The car reads the relayed signal as the fob being nearby and unlocks. That mechanism is different from the replay-code attacks on older Hondas and Acuras, which depend on capturing and replaying a stored code. Relay attacks do not need any captured code, just the live signal extended through walls. A Faraday pouch around every fob at home shuts the attack down completely. Audi's 2020 and newer models with ultra-wideband add some resistance but do not close the door entirely.

Yes. From the 2015 model year forward, Audi shifted to high-security laser-cut blades on the HU162T profile. Those blades cannot be reproduced at a hardware store kiosk or with a basic key duplicator because the cuts run on both sides of the blade and require a milling-style laser cutter. Both the blank inventory and the laser cutter ride in the van on every Audi call, so no parts delay slows down newer A4, A5, Q5, or Q7 service work.
