Key Fob Programming Options We Offer

Prices below are typical ranges. Your exact cost depends on year, make, model, and whether all keys have been lost. We'll confirm the price before any work starts.

01

OEM Fob Programming

Factory fob in hand but the car won't recognize it? We pair it at your location using the same platforms the dealer uses.

Mobile OEM fob pairing for a 2019 GMC Sierra in a driveway in Vista, California. Using an AutoProPad, the factory fob is authenticated to the truck's body control module with the manufacturer's exact handshake for that build.

We write the fob's ID directly to your vehicle's ECU using an Autel IM508 or AutoProPad, following the manufacturer's exact pairing protocol for your year and trim.

02

Aftermarket Fob Programming

Ordered a fob online for half the dealer price? Smart move. We'll program it and make sure it actually works.

Mobile aftermarket fob programming on a 2018 Honda CR-V at a homeowner's driveway in San Marcos, California.

Aftermarket fobs vary in quality, but with the right chip and correct frequency, most perform identically to factory units. We verify the FCC ID and carrier frequency match your vehicle before we touch the OBD-II port.

03

Remote Start Fob Sync

Lock and unlock buttons work fine, but the remote start won't fire? That's because it talks to a completely separate module.

Remote start pairing for a 2020 Ford F-150 in a homeowner's driveway in Encinitas, California. The standard lock and unlock buttons worked fine, but the dedicated remote start module needed its own handshake through our platform to come online.

Remote start operates through a dedicated module that pairs independently from your standard keyless entry. Programming the fob for door cylinders doesn't automatically sync the remote start.

04

Multi-Fob Programming

Adding a second fob? Every fob you own needs to be present, or the new one can erase the old one.

Multi-fob session on a 2019 Mazda CX-5 at a driveway in La Mesa, California, adding a new fob alongside two existing ones.

Most vehicles wipe their fob memory during a new pairing session and only recognize fobs programmed in that session. Program a second fob on its own and the first one goes dead.

05

Fob Resync After Battery Swap

Replaced the battery and the fob went completely dead? Don't throw it out. It probably just lost sync.

Mobile fob resync for a 2018 Volkswagen Jetta in a driveway in Santee, California, after a battery change left the remote non-responsive.

Some vehicles desync the rolling code when the fob battery is swapped. The fob hardware is fine, the battery is fine, but the fob and the car's receiver are no longer speaking the same sequence.

Dealer-Purchased Fob Activation

Already bought the fob from the dealer? Skip their programming fee and let us activate it for less.

Programming a dealer-supplied fob for a 2020 Chrysler 300 at a home in National City, California. The customer bought the fob at the parts counter and skipped the dealer's programming add-on, which runs separately and can hit two hundred.

Dealerships charge separately for the fob and the programming, and the programming fee alone can run $150 to $250 depending on the brand. If you've already purchased the fob, there's no reason to pay their rate on top of it.

Sound Familiar?

  • Your replacement fob arrived in the mail and the instructions say "professional programming required."
  • You got a great deal on two aftermarket fobs online but they're completely blank and won't do anything until they're paired.
  • The body shop replaced your windshield or did electrical work and now the fob doesn't communicate with the car.
  • You swapped the fob battery at home and it went from working perfectly to doing absolutely nothing.
  • Your dealership wants almost as much to program the fob as they charged you to buy it, and you'd rather not pay twice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is fob programming different from getting a full key replacement?
Key replacement means we supply the physical key or fob, cut any blade, and program everything from scratch. Fob programming means we take a fob you already have and pair it to your vehicle's computer. If you already own the hardware and just need it activated, fob programming is the faster, cheaper service.
Does every fob need professional programming, or can I do it myself?
Some older vehicles have a self-programming sequence you can do with the ignition and existing keys. Most vehicles built after 2010 require a professional diagnostic tool to write the fob's ID to the ECU. If the YouTube video for your car says "insert key, turn ignition five times," it might work. If it says "requires dealer or locksmith," that's where we come in.
Will adding a new fob deactivate my current one?
On many vehicles, yes. The pairing process clears the ECU's fob memory and only saves fobs programmed during that session. That's why we always ask you to bring every working fob. We register them all at once so none of them lose access.
Can you tell me over the phone if my aftermarket fob will work?
Usually. If you send us the FCC ID, part number, or a link to the listing, we can check the chip type and frequency against your vehicle's requirements. We verify again in person before we start programming, but the phone check catches most incompatible fobs before we ever schedule.
What happens if the fob doesn't work after programming?
We test every function before we leave: lock, unlock, trunk, panic, and remote start if applicable. If a function fails, we troubleshoot it right there. If the fob turns out to be defective or incompatible, we let you know and you don't pay for programming. You only pay when everything works.
Is there a difference between programming a proximity fob and a standard remote fob?
Yes. A standard remote fob sends a signal when you press a button. A proximity fob communicates passively with the car just by being nearby, which requires a more complex pairing to the vehicle's antenna system. Proximity fob programming takes the same amount of time in most cases, but the diagnostic sequence is different under the hood.
Why is fob programming cheaper than full key replacement?
Because we're not supplying the hardware or cutting a blade. The fob already exists. We're just writing its identity to your vehicle's computer and verifying the pairing. Less material cost, less labor, lower price. If you can source your own fob for less than what a locksmith or dealer charges, programming-only is the most cost-effective route.
Can you program a fob that was previously paired to a different vehicle?
In most cases, yes. Used fobs can be wiped and reprogrammed to a new vehicle as long as the chip type and frequency match. We see this with people who buy used OEM fobs online for less than new ones cost. We verify the fob is compatible, clear the old pairing, and write it to your car's ECU.
