How the A5 Key System Has Changed
B8 Pre-Facelift (Flip Key Era)
Your blade folds into the fob, and the immobilizer runs through Audi's Immobilizer III system. Audi kept things relatively simple here with a flip key and a ID48 (PCF7945AC) transponder chip. Programming can go through OBD-II or EEPROM depending on the specific configuration, but either way we sort it at the vehicle.
B8 (Remote Head and Smart Key Options)
Higher trims got proximity entry, while base models stuck with a traditional key. Audi stepped things up here with an ID48 (PCF7945AC) chip and the option for either a remote head key or a proximity fob depending on your trim level. All of them run Audi Immobilizer III and program through OBD-II.
B8.5 Facelift (Smart Key Standard)
Programming runs through OBD-II or on-board methods, and our van carries the Xhorse VVDI and Autel IM608 to handle both. This is where the A5 went fully proximity fob with a PCF7945AC chip and push-button start on most trims. Keyless Go became standard across the lineup.
B9 Early (Transition Year)
The 2017 moved to Audi Immobilizer IV with the same PCF7945AC chip but added server authentication requirements. This is where security got serious. Some 2017 models carry over B8.5 components, so we always verify by VIN before quoting. This generation may require dealer server access for transponder programming, and we will tell you that upfront.
Pinpoint Your A5 Key Type
The blade folds into the fob body. The original A5 flip key. Three buttons for lock, unlock, and trunk. No push-button start on these.
Both use a high security HU66 blade and three buttons. Depending on your trim, you either have a traditional remote head key or a proximity fob with proximity entry.
The emergency blade is hidden inside the fob. Full proximity fob with push-button start and Keyless Go. You walk up, grab the handle, and the car unlocks.
Push-button start with proximity detection. Same proximity fob form factor as the B8.5 but running on the newer B9 platform with upgraded immobilizer security.
Cost by Generation
Quoted prices include the blank, cut, programming, and full test at your address. Nothing tacked on at the end.
Compared to the Dealer
Audi service writes $675 and books you for next week. We carry identical programming gear in the van and finish at your driveway for around half.
What Goes Wrong With A5 Keys
Smart Key Battery Drain
2008-2013 A5s lose fob detection after years of California heat, mimicking a dead fob battery. The 125 kHz LF antenna under the dash breaks down before the fob. We test antenna current with the IM608 and re-pair the fob.
Transponder Sync Failure
We tackle it curbside with the IM608. A5 starts fine for weeks, then one morning the immobilizer light comes on and the engine will not crank. After a dead battery or module reset. Fix is OBD-II reprogramming to re-sync.
Keyless Go Range Loss
On the 2012-2017 A5, the culprit when the handle stops detecting your key is often a weak LF antenna in the door handle itself, not the fob battery. We test fob signal first; if it checks out, it is an antenna issue.
Blade Wear on HU66
HU66 high security blade on your 2008-2016 A5 wears with daily use, and once cuts round off, a programmed key will not turn. Cheap duplicates worsen it. We cut from a fresh blank using the original code, not a copy of a copy.
DIY Programming Options on the A5
For anything involving the immobilizer, you need professional OBD-II equipment. You can re-sync the lock and unlock buttons yourself using a simple relearn procedure with one working key. But this only fixes the remote functions. It does not program the transponder chip, which means it will not help if your key will not start the car.

Background You Will Not See on a Spec Sheet
The 2008 A5 was one of the first luxury coupes to ship pocket-leave keyless start in the US. Audi branded it Advanced Key and ran a 125 kHz LF antenna with 433 MHz rolling-code encryption, the same architecture the B8 A4 inherited a year later. That shared design is why a 2010 A5 dispatched out of Encinitas and a 2012 A4 in Mira Mesa get programmed on identical IM608 routines, just different VIN profiles.
