A catering company owner called me just after 6 in the morning from a commercial kitchen off Bancroft in Spring Valley. She had a wedding reception to deliver for and her 2014 A5 was sitting dead in the lot. The smart fob was not responding at all, and when she tried the emergency metal key in the door cylinder, it was so stiff from dried-up old grease that it barely moved. Her van was loaded. The door cylinder was the first problem. I worked it loose without forcing it, got inside, and connected through the OBD port to read what the vehicle's system was actually seeing. The fob had a completely dead CR2032, but there was a second issue: the vehicle security system had lost its pairing with the fob, likely from the battery sitting at zero long enough. A fresh CR2032 alone would not have fixed it. The pairing had to be re-established through the diagnostic session.
Once that was sorted, I walked every function. Lock, unlock, the trunk release, all four buttons. Everything came back. Total hands-on time was under 30 minutes.
She was loaded and pulling out of that lot before 7. She mentioned what the dealer had quoted her the last time she had a key issue on a different car. This was a fraction of that, and there was no tow, no waiting room, no losing a morning.
