Out in Buena Creek, near the trailhead parking off Vista, a guy called me about his 2009 A5. He had been mountain biking and came back to an empty jersey pocket. The key was gone. Somewhere on the trail, in the dirt, not coming back. He had bought the car used a couple years back and never had a second key made, which is the most common setup I see on these.
He assumed the car was getting towed. That is almost always the first assumption people make when they hear "all-keys-lost on an Audi."
I drove out to the lot. The A5 was sitting there locked, no key in existence anywhere. First thing I did was decode the door lock mechanically to get the correct cut for a new blade. Once I had that, I connected through the OBD port, pulled the immobilizer PIN from the vehicle's own memory, and ran the all-keys-lost sequence. That process clears out every previously registered key, which matters because his lost key, wherever it ended up, can no longer start the car. Then I enrolled the new fob as the primary key, tested the remote functions, tested the start.
He was back on the road from that same dirt lot.
The dealer quote he had already started to think about would have meant a tow first, then a wait for parts, then the programming appointment. We skipped all of that. Mobile, on-site, done.
