It was a July afternoon in San Ysidro, right in the Border Area, and she had a back seat full of wedding flowers. Peonies and garden roses, already cut, already arranged, and sitting in a locked 2011 Audi A5 with the AC off and the windows up.

The CR2032 had leaked inside the housing. Not just drained. Leaked. There was corrosion on one of the internal contacts that a fresh battery wasn't going to fix.
I connected my diagnostic equipment to the OBD port under the dash, pulled up the immobilizer data, and worked through the key adaptation process for the A5. New fob, programmed on site, tested across every function: lock, unlock, trunk release, and comfort access detection from outside each door. Everything confirmed before I packed up.
Start to finish from her phone call to the engine running was about 43 minutes for the door and diagnosis, 95 minutes total including the full key programming and testing. The dealer would have been the next day and cost her considerably more. The flowers made it to the venue.
She didn't say much when it was done. She just looked at the back seat, looked at me, and said "thank you" in a way that meant something more than the key.
