About Jeep Keys

Three decades of Jeep key systems live in one van: late-1990s Sentry Key transponders, mid-2000s smart proximity keys, and the Keyless Enter 'N Go fobs running on current Wrangler, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, and Gladiator. The platform shifts matter, what programs a YJ won't touch a JL. We bring the right parts and tools for your specific generation, anywhere across San Diego County.
From Sentry Key to Keyless Enter 'N Go, Programmed Curbside

Jeep's key timeline has three landmark dates worth knowing. 1998: Sentry Key Immobilizer System launches across Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, and Wrangler TJ. 2005: the Grand Cherokee WK becomes the first Jeep with a true smart proximity key. 2011: Keyless Enter 'N Go has spread to the Wrangler JK and most of the rest of the passenger lineup. After 2005, every Jeep key job requires the vehicle security PIN pulled out of the Wireless Control Module or RF Hub, work we run at the curb with JScan and Autel tooling.

The 2018 JL Cutoff and What It Means
The hard line in the Jeep timeline sits at 2018: the Wrangler JL introduced a security upgrade that makes the PIN retrieval path used on every earlier model ineffective for full all-keys-lost programming. Add-a-key when two working keys already exist is still straightforward mobile work on the JL. Full all-keys-lost on a 2018-and-newer JL frequently requires dealer involvement, and we say so upfront on the call. JK and earlier generations of Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, Compass, and Renegade all stay mobile across San Diego County.
Jeep Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz

The Jeep dealer math in San Diego County stacks two ranges: $330 to $550 for a standard smart key replacement, $500 to $1,000 for an all-keys-lost on a push-to-start model, tow truck on top in most cases. We compress that to a single line item for most Jeep work, no tow, no diagnostic fee, and a straight answer about JL all-keys-lost limitations on the phone before anyone dispatches.

What to Do When Your Jeep Fob Dies

The mechanical key blade lives inside the fob, accessed by a small release button on the side. Press the button and slide the blade out. Door entry only, this blade does not start the engine on any push-button-start Jeep.

The driver door lock cylinder usually hides under a small pry-off cover near the door handle. Pop the cover with the blade tip, insert the blade, manually unlock the door, climb in. Expect the alarm to chirp briefly; it silences as soon as the vehicle starts successfully.

Door shut, fob in hand, press the nose or top end of the dead fob directly against the push-to-start button itself. Grand Cherokee owners: top of the fob against the button. Wrangler JL owners: RFID chip end of the fob against the button. The coil antenna inside the start button reads the fob's passive transponder chip at close range, no battery power required.

Foot on the brake, hold it firmly, then press the start button normally while still holding the fob against it. The engine should fire. If the dash throws Key Fob Not Detected, reposition the fob slightly against the button face and try again, the read zone is small.

First stop after you're moving: pick up a fresh Panasonic CR2032. Avoid Duracell with the bitter child-secure coating, it's the documented cause of premature failure in Jeep fobs. The fob retains its programming through the swap, no reprogramming needed.
Pro Tip
The 2015 Jeep Cherokee sits at the center of one of the most consequential automotive security recalls in history. After security researchers proved they could remotely commandeer a Cherokee through the Sprint cellular network without any physical access, taking over the infotainment system, climate controls, and at low speeds even the brakes and transmission, Fiat Chrysler recalled roughly 1.4 million Uconnect-equipped vehicles. The vulnerability lived in the head unit's network architecture, not the key system, but the lesson generalizes: modern vehicles are deeply networked, and a single unpatched component can become a remote entry point. FCA issued a USB software patch and added network firewalls. If you own a 2015 Cherokee and never applied the patch, the VIN-level check at a Jeep dealer is overdue.
Relay Theft on Wranglers and Gladiators
On the key side, Wrangler and Gladiator owners across San Diego County need to know about relay theft. The attack uses signal amplification hardware to capture the proximity fob's transmission from inside your home and replay it at the car. Confirmed real-world thefts have targeted high-value Wranglers specifically. A Faraday pouch parked next to the door blocks the signal at the source and eliminates the attack vector entirely. Adding a steering wheel lock layers a visible deterrent on top that relay crews typically skip past.
Jeep Owners on Our Service
"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."
Gordon Harada"EZ Car Keys is by far the best locksmith I've ever used. Marco is prompt, prices are reasonable, and he has the experience that leaves you comfortable. We've used him twice and will never use anyone else!"
Traci Thomas"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
