How the Compass Key Security Got Locked Down
First Gen (Early MK)
Turn-key ignition with an ID46 (PCF7936) transponder hiding inside the head. The chip has to clear SKIM before the engine catches. Three buttons, standard blade, CR2032 coin cell, OBD-II program. Twenty minutes parked in a Spring Valley driveway and the job is done.
First Gen Facelift (MK)
Facelifted MKs run the same ID46 (PCF7936) and SKIM brain as the earlier years, but the electronics under the dash got a refresh. Still a 3-button remote head key on a standard blade. The SKIM module on these facelift builds gets temperamental, so Marco verifies it on the scanner before writing anything.
Second Gen (MP)
Second-gen MP stepped up hard. ID47 chip, high-security blade, RFID immobilizer, 3-button flip key with push-button start. Programming still flows through OBD-II but needs a J2534 interface plus proxy alignment between the BCM and the immobilizer to take.
Third Gen (MP2)
MP2 is where the security got serious. PCF7953 chip with advanced RFID and Stellantis server authentication for every program write. Four-button smart key, laser-cut emergency blade. The van runs the online verify on-site, just adds time to the call.
Which Key Is in Your Compass Carry?
Chunky plastic-headed key with the buttons built into the head and the cut blade out the bottom. Slide it into the ignition like any other key. If you have owned the Compass since the early MK years, this is the unit in your console.
Blade folds into the fob shell when you are not using it. Push-button start means it lives in your pocket most days, but the high-security emergency blade swings out for backup entry.
Slim proximity fob that rides in your pocket. The Compass spots it as you walk up and the dash button fires the engine. Tiny laser-cut emergency blade hides inside for dead-battery rescues.

Top Compass Key Failures We See in 619
SKIM Module Failure
Compass cranks but never catches, security light solid: SKIM losing the conversation with the transponder. 2007-2016 builds, especially facelifted, get hit hard. Marco diagnoses with a scanner and reprograms or swaps the module curbside in Chula Vista.
Transponder Chip Recognition Loss
Owners blame the key battery when the culprit is the antenna coil around the ignition cylinder. Weak coil means the chip signal never reaches the brain. 2007-2018 models see this most. Marco tests coil signal first, because sometimes it is a loose connection.
Fob Battery Drain
2017-2021 second-gen Compass fobs chew through CR2032 coin cells. Constant polling between fob and RF hub even when parked is the cause. Burning a battery every few weeks usually means the RF hub needs a software update. Van handles that on the visit.
Proxy Alignment Error
Before key programming on 2017+ models, Marco checks proxy alignment between BCM and immobilizer. Misalignment from a battery disconnect or failed program means new keys will not take. Shops that skip this blame the blank. Align first, write the chip second.
Can You Program a Compass Key in San Diego?
Two working keys in hand? You can add a third through the SKIM relearn. First key on, hold ON 5 to 10 seconds, swap to the second within 8 seconds, drop the new key in within 40. Security light confirms the take. One key or fewer means the van rolls.
Remote buttons (lock and unlock) pair on their own through an ignition cycle OFF to ACC five times in 10 seconds, then a fob press at the chime. That only pairs the remote half. The transponder chip still needs a J2534 interface, which means a service call for the start half.
Zero self-program path. Advanced RFID immobilizer plus Stellantis server authentication means every new key needs professional tools and an online connection. (619) 876-1271 and the van rolls.

Jeep Trivia Worth Knowing
The 2007 Compass was the first Jeep to ship with Chrysler's SKIM borrowed from Dodge. Before that, Jeep ran its own approach to transponder security. That one model year tied the brand into Chrysler's broader electronic security architecture, a shift that still echoes through every Stellantis vehicle today.
