2013 Jeep Compass
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I really have to tow my Compass to the dealer if I have no working key?

No. That's the dealer's preferred route because it's their only route. We come to you. Whether you're parked at a field near Brown Field Area or in your driveway in Otay Mesa, we bring the programming equipment to the vehicle. The 2013 Compass doesn't require the kind of factory-portal access that later model years introduced, so a qualified mobile locksmith with the right tools can handle the full job on location.

Q: How long does an all-keys-lost job take on a 2013 Compass?

Typically 45 minutes to an hour on site. That covers decoding or cutting the blade, running the security erase through the OBD port, programming the new remote head key, and testing every function including start, lock, unlock, and remote range. The 2013 Compass does not have the gateway restrictions that complicated later Jeep models, so once the equipment is connected the process moves quickly. Most of the time is setup and testing, not waiting on the tool.

Q: My Compass starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Is the key dead?

Not necessarily. On the 2013 Compass remote head key, the transponder that starts the car and the remote transmitter that handles lock and unlock are in the same housing but operate independently. If the engine starts but the buttons do nothing, try the CR2032 first. A weak battery will kill remote range and button response while leaving the transponder completely functional. If a fresh battery doesn't fix it, the button contacts inside the rubber pad may be worn through.

Q: Can I program a second key myself at home to save money?

The 2013 Compass remote head key requires professional diagnostic equipment to add to the vehicle's system. There's no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that registers a new key on this platform. If you bought a blank fob online, it still needs to be cut to your vehicle and programmed through the OBD port with the right tool. The blank itself can save you something, but the programming step isn't a DIY option here.

2013 Jeep Compass Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

There's a little league complex near the Brown Field Area that stays busy on weekends. I pulled up on a Saturday afternoon and a baseball coach was leaning against his 2013 Compass with a bag of equipment and a fair question before I'd even opened my kit.

He wanted to know what happens if the key stops working next month. His Compass was the family hauler, kids and gear in it constantly, and he couldn't be stranded with that situation.

I gave him the same answer I give everyone. The chip is warrantied. The programming is warrantied. The cut is warrantied. If something I did fails, I drive back out, same van, same person, no charge.

Then I got to work. Decoded his lock, cut a fresh key blade to match. The 2013 Compass takes a remote head key, 4-button unit, and programs through the OBD port with the right equipment. Once the key was in the system I tested start, lock, unlock, and range from across the parking lot. Then I made him wait about five minutes and tested it again cold, because intermittent faults on these sometimes only surface after the key sits idle for a bit.

It started clean both times. He loaded his equipment bag and drove off without giving the dealer a second thought. That's the goal.

Jeep Compass Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 2013 Jeep Compass. Can you still make one?▼

Yes, and all-keys-lost on the 2013 Compass is a job we handle on site. The process involves getting into the vehicle security system through the OBD port, erasing any previously registered keys, and programming fresh ones so your lost keys can no longer start the car. The 2013 model year responds well to professional key programming equipment without the added complexity that newer Jeep platforms introduced in later years.
