TJ: Where SKIM Started
Sentry Key arrived on the TJ and rewrote Wrangler theft economics overnight. A Texas 4D transponder lives in the plastic head of a blank-looking blade. No buttons, no remote, just a chip the SKIM module either accepts or refuses. Marco pulls the PIN, programs through OBD-II, and you are rolling out of Lakeside or Spring Valley inside 20 minutes.
JK: Buttons on the Head
The JK kept the SKIM brain but added a 3-button head running PCF7936/PCF7941 silicon (ID46 family). Lock, unlock, panic, all baked into the same casting you turn in the ignition. CR2032 keeps the radio side breathing. OBD-II handles the program. Common call across Mira Mesa, Carmel Mountain Ranch, and the I-15 corridor.
JL: AES Smart Key Era
JL is where the math got hard. PCF7939MA HITAG AES rolling code, 5-button proximity fob, push-button start, emergency blade tucked inside the housing. Mopar wants server authentication before any new key talks to the truck. Marco runs that auth from the van right there off I-8, so the tow truck stays parked.
Which Wrangler Key Is in Your Pocket?
Bare metal blade, chip hidden in the plastic bow. Zero buttons, zero battery. Cranks the engine or it does not, no in-between.
Heavy-headed key with three rubberized buttons. Transponder, remote, and blade share one housing. CR2032 keeps the buttons live.
Pocket fob with five buttons and push-button start. A laser-cut emergency blade slides out of the back for valet or dead-battery scenarios.

SKIM Module Failure
Behind the ignition switch, the SKIM module quietly dies and the Wrangler refuses to crank. TJ and JK trucks 1997-2018 are the usual suspects. Marco diagnoses curbside in Coronado or Chula Vista and swaps in a replacement, no flatbed needed.
Transponder Chip Recognition Loss
Crank, sputter, dead. Classic immobilizer reject after a battery disconnect or jump start. We reset SKIM and reprogram through OBD-II right where you are stuck. Weekly call from El Cajon, Poway, and the Encinitas/Carlsbad stretch.
Fob Battery Drain
Constant RF polling eats CR2032 cells faster than anyone expects, and the JL smart key is the worst offender in the lineup. Marco tests the fob signal, swaps the battery, and verifies range before you spend a dime on a new key.
Proxy Alignment Issues
No-crank on a JL? Proximity alignment is the first thing to check. The smart key and the truck's RFID network have to sync inside a tight window. Off by a hair and the fob ghosts you. We realign and reauthenticate through Mopar from the van.
Can You DIY a Wrangler Key in San Diego?
Nothing self-serve on a TJ. SKIM demands a pro programmer plus the PIN, and there is no onboard ignition dance that will get you there. Marco pulls the PIN curbside.
Got two working keys? You can add a third with an ignition timing sequence yourself. Drop to one key or zero and you need professional tooling. Remote buttons stay unprogrammed on the DIY route.
