Out in San Diego Country Estates, I got a call from a woman who taught at a preschool nearby. She had a 2001 Wrangler and wanted a spare made before a camping trip. One key, no backup, heading into the backcountry. Smart to think ahead.
She had called the dealer first. They told her to bring the Jeep in, gave her a number that made her pause, and said it could take a day depending on the service queue. I met her at the vehicle that evening. The 2001 Wrangler is one of the earlier years where the transponder system was still being sorted out by owners who were used to plain metal keys. A lot of people in that era bought a copied blade at the hardware store, watched it turn the ignition perfectly, and then sat there confused when nothing happened. The chip in the key head is what completes the circuit. No valid chip signal, no start.
I cut her a new blade to match her existing key and programmed the transponder on site using my programmer. The whole job ran about 30 minutes in her driveway. She had a working spare in her hand before dark, and she made her camping trip.
