Remote Head Key with Sentry Key
Dealer-only programming territory. The 2015 and 2016 builds run a 3-button remote head key on a standard blade you turn in the ignition. Sentry Key verifies the transponder chip before the engine fires, so a plain hardware-store copy never starts your Jeep.
Smart Proximity Key Arrives
Jeep made a real jump here. The 2017 and 2018 Renegade gets a 4-button smart proximity key with an ID47 chip, push-button start, and Keyless Enter-N-Go. Programming still needs professional OBD-II tools and dealer-level access to sync the Sentry Key system.
Server Authentication Added
Same smart key and ID47 chip carry over, but Jeep stacked server authentication on top. The tool has to talk live to Stellantis during the program write to verify the new key. Adds a few minutes to the call, the van handles it on-site without issue.
Facelift, Same Security
Cosmetic refresh on the truck, no change to the key system. The 2022 and 2023 still ride a 4-button smart key with an ID47 transponder and push-button start. Dealer-only programming gear required, which is exactly what rides in the van on every call.

Key Fob Battery Drain
Renegade owners assume the fob is dying when it is a known battery drain. Keyless Enter-N-Go on 2017-2023 keeps transmitting, chewing CR2032 coin cells. Burning batteries every few months is normal. Pop the fob with a coin, fresh CR2032 negative-side up.
Interference with Keyless Entry
Battery level is the first thing Marco checks. Nine of ten Renegades that quit detecting the fob just need a fresh CR2032. Battery fine? Next is RF interference from a phone mount or building security. 2015-2023 sensors need clean signal within five feet.
Transponder Programming Lockout
Sentry Key on every Renegade demands dealer-level tools for transponder sync. Cheap OBD readers will not get the job done and failed attempts can lock the system out. Autel IM608 and Xhorse VVDI Key Tool Plus ride on the van for Jeep's Sentry Key protocol.
Can You Program a Renegade Key in San Diego?
