I got a call from a guy in Old Town National City, late on a weeknight, parked in a lot near the commercial strip off National City Boulevard. He worked late and walked out to his 2016 Renegade to find his only key gone. Not in his bag, not in his jacket, not under the seat of a car he couldn't get into. Just gone.
He was calm at first, then started spiraling when he looked up what a dealer visit would cost and realized they were already closed anyway.
Before I even left my van, I walked him through finding the VIN -- base of the windshield, driver's side, look from outside the glass. He found it on his insurance card before he even got to the windshield. With the VIN confirmed and ownership verified, I already knew what I was coming out with.
I pulled up to the lot with the right fob blank and a charged-up diagnostic setup. I built the new fob on site, enrolled it to the vehicle security system through the OBD port, extracted and cut the emergency insert blade to match the door and ignition, and ran through every function before I called it done. Lock, unlock, remote start button, panic, the insert key in the door cylinder.
He did the thing where he kept clicking it like he was expecting it to fail. It didn't.
He drove home that night. The dealer would have meant a tow, a morning appointment, and a lot more money. He got the number when he called, and when I left, it was exactly what I said it would be.
