In Downtown La Mesa, I got a call from a woman who had been running on one key since she bought her 2019 Renegade used from a buy-here-pay-here lot. She always meant to get a spare cut. Then one afternoon the fob housing cracked at the seam -- old stress fracture that finally let go -- and when she tried to use the mechanical insert blade to get in, it snapped off inside the door lock cylinder. Fob body in one hand, blade tip stuck in the lock. Zero working keys and a hospital shift starting in a few hours.
She called the dealer first. They told her to tow it in, quoted her a wait of several days for parts, and the number they gave her made her put the phone down.
When I pulled up, the first thing I did was check the fob body she was holding. The shell was cracked through but the transponder chip inside was intact. That mattered. On an all-keys-lost job, the security system has to go through a full reset and relearn sequence, which adds time. But because that chip was still readable, I could work with what was there rather than starting from zero.
I extracted the broken blade from the lock cylinder, decoded the lock mechanically, and cut two new blades on site. I transferred the working electronics into a new fob shell, registered everything through the OBD port, and tested both keys through the full sequence -- door locks, push-button start, every button.
She went from zero keys to two in about 40 minutes. When I handed them over she just stood there clicking the lock button like she needed to confirm it was real.
She kept the cracked original shell, which I understood. When you've been running on one key that long, you don't throw any piece of it away until you're sure.
