The work happens through the CAS module using BMW-specific software, which is the exact tooling we keep in the van.

All-keys-lost is a regular mobile job for us. R50 and R56 generations get an OBD-II connection to the CAS module, which lets us read the security data and program new keys from a blank state. F56 and F60 are a step up, requiring CAS4 or BDC module access on top of that, which our BMW-compatible equipment also handles. For most MINI models the entire job runs in your driveway, no tow, no dealer.

Often fixable without a new key at all. The R56 generation from 2007 to 2013 is notorious for shells that go brittle under SoCal heat and crack on the first hard drop. We stock replacement shells that match the original circuit board, so the move is a transplant, original electronics into a fresh housing, no reprogramming needed because the chip and pairing are untouched. If the actual circuit board took damage too, then we cut and program a complete replacement at the car.

Plan on 45 to 75 minutes for most MINI key jobs at the car. CAS programming on a BMW platform is intentionally more involved than a standard Toyota or Honda procedure, so the timing reflects that, but everything finishes in a single visit. All-keys-lost cases run on the longer end because the CAS module read takes additional time.

No risk of losing programming from a battery change. The CAS pairing data lives inside the car's CAS module, not in the fob, so swapping the CR2032 has zero effect on the cryptographic relationship between the fob and the vehicle. After a fresh cell goes in, the fob should respond right away. If it does not, try holding the unlock button within a foot of the car for 15 to 30 seconds to force a resync. If even that fails, a full reprogram is the next step, and we run that at the car.
