R61 Base and Cooper S
Standard R61 trim ships a remote-head key with a Texas 4D transponder (PCF7952 / ID46) and a physical blade that turns in the ignition. BMW CAS3 immobilizer shakes hands with the chip on every start, so a hardware-store cut goes nowhere. We program these on-board through the OBD port in around 25 minutes parked in your driveway.
R61 John Cooper Works (JCW)
JCW trim steps up to a smart key with push-button start, Texas Crypto 4D chip, and the same CAS3 immobilizer underneath. Programming needs OBD-II plus server authentication. More time, more specialised tooling, but we close it out on-site with Autel IM608 and the right BMW credentials.

Transponder Sync Failure
R61 Paceman cranks but refuses to fire, or the immobilizer light stays lit after the key turn. Usually a flat 12V or jump knocked the BMW CAS3 module out of sync with the transponder. We relearn the chip through OBD with Autel IM608, curbside, no tow needed.
Fob Battery Drain
CR2032 in the R61 fob drains faster than owners expect. The transponder polling cycle, especially on ALL4 trims, pulls power even with the fob on the counter. Every 12 months is the safe swap window. Drain repeating after a fresh cell points at fob internals.
Blade Wear on Ignition
