A guy in Downtown Santee called me on a Tuesday morning. His 2016 MINI Paceman was showing a key-not-detected warning on the dash and he had already replaced the fob battery twice. He was convinced the key was fried and wanted a new one programmed on the spot.

I drove out to him on Via Magnolia, popped the fob open on the hood of my van, and there it was. The battery contact had a slight bend, barely visible, just enough to lose connection when the plastic expanded or contracted with heat.
I straightened the contact, seated a fresh CR2032 flat and firm, and closed it up. Tested every button, walked both doors, verified the vehicle was reading the fob the way it should. No warning light. No hesitation.
He had been ready to pay for a full replacement key. He didn't need one. He needed someone who knew where to look first.
