The F55 Hardtop 4 Door launch carried a 3-button smart proximity fob with a flip-out laser-cut emergency blade and a BMW-compatible transponder paired to the BMW CAS4 / Body Domain Controller immobilizer. Push-button start across every trim. Programming runs OBD-II with BMW diagnostic equipment plus an SGW bypass to pull the security PIN. The dealer route is not the only route, but neither is the cheap one: this is real BMW tooling, and we carry it on every San Diego truck.

Keyless Entry/Start Malfunction
Proximity receiver modules in door handles fail with age, top reason keyless entry quits on these F55s. Pull the handle, nothing. We test receiver modules and fob signal curbside in Mira Mesa or Carmel Valley. Fob-side or vehicle-side, you find out first.
Key Fob Battery Drain
Push the button, no response, fob looks fine but the CR2032 is flat. These smart keys drain faster than most due to proximity polling. Mini issued SI M12 07 14 covering premature discharge. Every 4-6 months is the safe swap window. CR2032s on every truck.
Immobilizer System Lockout
Owners blame the key when the BMW CAS4 immobilizer loses sync after a 12V disconnect, jump, or electrical work. The fob is fine; the F55 stopped recognizing it. We pull CAS4 module data with BMW diagnostic equipment and re-pair your existing fob curbside.
Door Cylinder Actuator Failure
Keyless unlock dies on one door first. Top suspect: the door cylinder actuator. The 2015 redesign moved lock hardware out of the centre console and into the doors. We confirm fob, receiver, then actuator. Actuator failure is mechanical, not locksmith.
Can You Program a Mini Hardtop 4 Door Key Yourself?
Halfway, with conditions. With one working fob in hand, you can hold the new one against the steering-column markings and press start repeatedly to register it for ignition and immobilizer recognition. Remote functions sync alongside. But the laser-cut blade still needs the right BMW-spec cutter, you cannot delete a lost fob this way, and an all-keys-lost call goes nowhere.
