I got a call from someone parked near a shopping center on the Westside Escondido side of town. He had his 2017 MINI Hardtop 4 Door, a dead fob, and a meeting he was already late for.
He had swapped the CR2032 himself that morning, which was the right instinct. But the dash was still showing a key warning, the Comfort Access handles were not waking up, and the car was not starting. He had already called the dealer. They told him to have it towed in and plan on waiting a day or two for the key to be ordered.
I pulled up, popped the fob open with a trim tool, and the new battery was in there fine. But the contact plate on the positive side had a slight bow to it, just enough that under vibration it would lose its grip. I corrected the contact, reseated the battery, and the fob came right back. No programming needed at all.
We still ran through the full check: Comfort Access on both front handles, the lock and unlock buttons, and the start response. Everything was clean.
He made his meeting. The whole stop was maybe twenty minutes. He mentioned what the dealer had quoted for a full replacement key and just shook his head. I get that reaction a lot.
