I got a call from someone parked near the Bonsall end of Fallbrook, along the stretch before the bridge. She had driven out to meet a friend, shut the car off, and when she came back the 2018 MINI Hardtop 4 Door would not acknowledge the fob at all. No door unlock, no response from the handle, nothing on the start button. Just a key-not-detected warning sitting on the dash like it had always been there.
She had already tried the spare. Same result.
That detail caught my attention on the phone. When the spare does the same thing as the primary fob, you stop looking at the fobs and start thinking about the vehicle side: the antenna ring, the body control side of the immobilizer, or a power issue that knocked out fob reception. I told her I'd head out and we'd sort it on site.
When I got there I did the basic check first. CR2032 in both fobs was fine. But when I plugged in and scanned the system, there was a stored fault on the receiver side, probably from a brief voltage drop, that had knocked the fob registration loose without actually deleting it. The fobs were enrolled but the car had stopped trusting them after that event.
Cleared the fault, cycled the system, and re-verified both fobs through the diagnostic port. Took about forty minutes total including drive time.
She asked about the dealer on the way out. I told her they'd have needed an appointment, probably a day or two out, a loaner or a ride home, and a bill that reflected all of that. She got it done in a parking spot off the road in Bonsall for a fraction of what they wanted.
