About Scion Keys

Scion key replacement overview in San Diego County

Every Scion ever sold in the US was a Toyota underneath. The brand never built a key system of its own - the xA, xB, tC, FR-S, xD, iQ, iM, iA all ran Toyota's immobilizer architecture from the day they rolled off the line. That means your Scion programs through the same Toyota Techstream-compatible tools we use for any Camry or Corolla call. We bring the correct Toyota-inventory blanks, finish the job in your driveway, and the bill comes in well under a Toyota dealer's quote.

Scion Keys Are Toyota Keys. We Service Them as Such.

Scion

There is no separate Scion immobilizer technology to learn. Every car the brand sold in the US between 2004 and 2016 used a Toyota immobilizer with Toyota blanks and Toyota PIN architecture. The xA and the xB rode on the Yaris and bB platforms with ID33 and ID47 transponder chips. The tC had its own body but shared the Toyota immobilizer system underneath. The FR-S split DNA with the Subaru BRZ but routes through Toyota's OBD-II approach for programming. The whole lineup talks to Toyota Techstream or compatible tools like Autel IM608. All-keys-lost on any of them needs either a working master key in hand or a PIN code pulled from Toyota TIS. We treat a Scion call as a Toyota call, because mechanically that is exactly what it is.

Scion What Shows Up When We Dispatch

What Shows Up When We Dispatch

tC, xB, xD, FR-S, iQ, iM, iA - all of them get the same dispatch on our end. We pull up to your address, the correct Toyota-platform blank is already in the van, the programming finishes in one visit, no dealer trip required at any point.

What Makes Scion Keys Different

Scion

Scion is a strange one to categorize in this trade because mechanically it was not a separate brand. Every car Scion sold in the US was a Toyota in a different body and a different badge. The xA was the Toyota ist in JDM markets. The first-gen xB was the Toyota bB. The tC was the Toyota Blade. The FR-S shared platform DNA with the Subaru BRZ but followed Toyota's key programming architecture, not Subaru's. The iM was the Toyota Auris. The iA was a Mazda2-derived Toyota Yaris iA. Same Toyota immobilizer, same Toyota PIN system, every single time.

Scion Why Locksmiths Get Scion Wrong

Why Locksmiths Get Scion Wrong

None of this was a secret at any point. Toyota was open about the platform sharing. The problem is that habit treats Scion as a separate category needing different parts, different tools, and special expertise - even among some locksmiths. It does not need any of that. The tools are Toyota tools. The blanks are Toyota blanks.

Scion Every Scion Key Is a Toyota Key

Every Scion Key Is a Toyota Key

On our end the workflow is identical to a Toyota call. Blanks come out of Toyota inventory. Programming runs through Toyota Techstream or a Techstream-compatible tool. PIN codes pull from Toyota TIS when needed. When Toyota wound down the Scion badge in 2016, the only thing that actually changed was what was glued to the trunk lid. The key on your ring has been a Toyota key the entire time you have owned the car.

Toyota Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz

Scion dealer vs EZ Car Keyz pricing comparison

Programming labor alone at a Toyota dealer in the county runs $80 to $150. Add an OEM fob at $120 to $160 and you are already past the all-in mobile locksmith number. Independent locksmith pricing on Scion work typically lands $70 to $350 depending on the model and key type, with cut and programming both completed at the car in one visit. We arrive with the correct Toyota-platform blank in hand and finish in one stop.

Scion Key Problems We Fix

Sound familiar? We handle all of these -on site, same day.

Scion Scion tC Ignition Refuses to Turn
Scion tC Ignition Refuses to Turn
Across both generations of the tC, the single most-reported key complaint is the same one: key goes in, key will not turn. The lock cylinder on the tC has a documented binding tendency that gets worse with mileage. First move at the car is always to gently rock the steering wheel left and right while applying steady turning pressure to the key. A locked steering column is the most common cause and the wheel rock releases it instantly. If the key still will not turn after that, the cylinder itself is worn or the ignition switch behind it has failed.
Scion Broken Transponder From DIY Switchblade Conversion
Broken Transponder From DIY Switchblade Conversion
Scion owners ordering aftermarket switchblade conversion kits off Amazon or eBay run into the same failure constantly. The kit instructs you to transfer the original transponder chip out of the factory key housing into the new switchblade housing. That chip is small, fragile, and bonded to the original housing in a way that does not tolerate prying. It cracks. Once cracked, the ECU gets no valid transponder signal and the car cranks all day without firing. The repair path is a freshly cut and programmed key from us at the car.
Scion Intermittent Keyless Entry on 2004-2006 xB
Intermittent Keyless Entry on 2004-2006 xB
The first-gen xB from 2004 through 2006 has documented intermittent keyless entry failures. The fob may unlock the doors fine one day and need three button presses at half-range the next, with no pattern. Body control module glitches and wiring chafing are the documented vehicle-side causes. Aftermarket accessories and a failing trunk light switch can both create parasitic draws that drain the fob battery faster than normal and compound the symptom. A BCM scan for receiver fault codes separates vehicle-side antenna failure from a simple weak-battery situation.
Scion Lost Every Scion Key
Lost Every Scion Key
All-keys-lost on a Scion runs through Toyota's PIN-based immobilizer workflow. For pre-2011 cars - xA, first-gen xB, first-gen tC - the procedure is straightforward and often does not require a PIN at all. For 2011 and newer push-start cars, a VIN-linked PIN pulled from Toyota TIS is mandatory before the immobilizer accepts a new key. We hold Toyota TIS access and close out Scion all-keys-lost at the car across every model year with no tow needed.

Pro Tip

Scion pro tip

For first-gen tC owners with 2005 to 2010 cars, the moment the key starts feeling sticky in the ignition is the moment to act. The first-gen tC lock cylinder has a documented tendency to bind progressively with wear. The failure curve runs predictably: occasional stickiness, then needing a hard turn, then needing the steering-wheel-rock trick on every start, then not turning at all and stranding the car. Get ahead of it with dry graphite lubricant applied directly into the key slot. Do not use WD-40 or any oil - those collect debris and accelerate the problem. Silicone spray is the only acceptable alternative.

Scion Signs Your tC Key Blade Is Worn

Signs Your tC Key Blade Is Worn

Watch for metal shavings on the key when you pull it out of the ignition. Those shavings are not coming from the cylinder - they are coming off your key blade. The blade has started rounding. Once it is rounded, every additional turn does more damage to the lock cylinder tumblers, which is a much bigger repair than a fresh key. We stock tC blanks for both generations and can cut plus program a new key at your address before the original fails completely.

Scion Owners on Our Service

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."

Gordon Harada

"EZ Car Keys is by far the best locksmith I've ever used. Marco is prompt, prices are reasonable, and he has the experience that leaves you comfortable. We've used him twice and will never use anyone else!"

Traci Thomas
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
