How the FR-S Key System Works
Early ZN6 Transponder Key
Standard metal transponder with a Texas 4D-67 G chip (80-bit) hidden in the plastic head. No buttons, no remote, just a blade that talks to the Toyota T13 immobilizer every time you twist the ignition. The on-board programming routine keeps the job fast curbside, which keeps the price down for you.
2015 Mid-Run, Same Hardware
Identical to 2013-2014. Same Texas 4D-67 G chip, same T13 immobilizer, same on-board procedure. Toyota didn't change a thing here, so a 2015 FR-S in Carmel Valley gets the exact same TR47 cut and pairing routine as an early ZN6.
Final Year of Scion
The 2016 carries the same Texas 4D-67 G chip and T13 immobilizer the car launched with. Last year wearing the Scion badge before the same chassis became the Toyota 86. On-board programming still works the same way Marco's been running it since day one.
Optional 3-Button Remote Head Key
The factory remote head option packs three buttons (lock, unlock, trunk), a CR2032 battery, and the same Texas 4D-67 G chip into one unit. Programming requires OBD-II access, so Marco plugs the Autel into your diagnostic port and handles the pairing from your driver's seat at the curb.
Which FR-S Key Do You Have?
A plain metal key with a chip inside the plastic head. No remote buttons. You turn it in the ignition and the chip communicates with your car's immobilizer to allow the engine to start.
Looks like a regular metal key but the head packs lock, unlock, and trunk buttons. CR2032 powers the remote functions, the Texas 4D-67 G chip handles starting the engine. One unit, two jobs.
FR-S Key Pricing in San Diego County
Prices include the TR47 blank, cutting to your Toyota key code, Texas 4D-67 G chip programming, and full lock/door/trunk testing. No hidden fees, no surprise add-ons, all done curbside anywhere in San Diego County.
EZ Car Keyz vs San Diego Scion Dealers
Kearny Mesa Toyota wants the car towed in, two business days, and a $300+ ticket to cut and pair one TR47 blade. Marco shows up at the parking lot in Mira Mesa or Carmel Valley, cuts the same blade to the same Toyota code, pairs the Texas 4D-67 G chip through OBD, and tests it before he leaves. Half the cost, same warranty, no tow.
Common FR-S Key Problems in San Diego
Texas 4D-67 G Chip Failure
Engine cranks, fires a half second, dies, security light flashing. Texas 4D-67 80-bit G chip failing against the T13 immobilizer. Common in San Diego sun (Mission Valley, El Cajon). Marco cuts a fresh TR47, programs via OBD-II with the Autel.
T13 Immobilizer Sync Loss
Almost always a dead 12V or a sloppy jump. When the FR-S loses main power, the T13 immobilizer ECU drops its handshake with the Texas 4D-67 G chip and the key won't crank. Marco plugs the Autel into OBD-II in San Diego and runs the Toyota relearn.
Worn Ignition Cylinder - San Diego
Before cutting, Marco checks the ignition cylinder. On 2014-2016 FR-S coupes, spirited driving and the daily commute up I-5 wear the wafers faster than owners expect. Sticky at run? The cylinder needs rebuild or swap before any new key fires.
Key Blade Breakage - San Diego
FR-S owners blame the snapped blade on a defect. Reality: the TR47 standard blade is thinner than most Toyota keys; manual door unlocks stress the metal. Broken in the cylinder? Marco extracts and cuts a fresh TR47 in Chula Vista or La Jolla.
Can You Self-Program an FR-S Key in San Diego?
There is no DIY self-programming procedure for the Scion FR-S. Every key, transponder or remote head, requires OBD programming with professional locksmith equipment like the Autel IM608 or Xhorse VVDI. Call Marco at (619) 876-1271 and it's handled curbside.

Did You Know?
The Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ, and Toyota 86 are mechanically the same car, but Toyota stamped the key architecture for all three. That means a Subaru locksmith working a BRZ in Encinitas reaches for Toyota Techstream-compatible tools, not Subaru ones, and the TR47 blade with the Texas 4D-67 G chip cuts to the same Toyota 50000-series code regardless of which badge is on the hood. Three brands, one immobilizer.
