I got a call from a guy in the Las Americas Area of San Ysidro at about 1 in the morning. His 2015 FR-S was parked on the street, and his only key had stopped being recognized by the car. Not a dead battery situation. The car simply would not acknowledge the key existed. When I got there, the street was quiet. He was sitting on his front steps with the key in his hand like he was waiting on a verdict. I plugged into the OBD port, pulled up the Toyota-platform procedure for all-keys-lost on the FR-S, and walked through the immobilizer reset. The FR-S runs a well-documented Toyota-based security system, and this generation is a job I do on-site without any bench work or towing.
New remote head key, cut to the vehicle, programmed and registered. I walked him through the button functions and had him test it himself. Locked, unlocked, confirmed the engine started and held. The whole thing was done before 2 a.m., on the street, no tow, no appointment.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a number that made him pause, plus the tow on top of that, plus waiting until they could fit him in. He saved a good chunk going the mobile route, but honestly what mattered more to him at that hour was not having to leave the car on the street overnight.
I should be straight with you: there are some situations, usually edge cases on newer or heavily modified setups, where all-keys-lost requires additional steps beyond a standard OBD procedure. I will tell you that before I show up, not after. The FR-S in this generation is not one of those edge cases. It is a well-covered platform and I do these regularly.
