About GMC Keys

GMC key replacement overview in San Diego County

Four key generations underpin the GMC lineup: VATS resistor pellets from the 1980s and 90s, PK3 transponders from 1997 forward, sidewinder flip fobs starting with the 2014 Sierra, and current M3N-32337100 proximity smart keys. Drive a Sierra, Yukon, Acadia, Canyon, or Terrain and we have the right blank, the right chip, and the GM PIN access on the van. We program at your truck across San Diego County, no dealer slot required.

Every GMC Generation, Handled at the Curb

GMC

Three inflection points shape modern GMC key service. The first was 1997, when transponder chip keys spread across Sierra and Yukon, eventually settling on PK3 encrypted chips by the early 2000s. The second was 2014, when the Sierra brought the high-security sidewinder laser-cut flip key and proximity push-to-start to the full-size lineup. The third was 2017, when GMC quietly added a rule that breaks plenty of single-key owners: you need two working keys to add a third without triggering a full all-keys-lost reset. And the wrapping requirement: any 2005 and newer GMC needs a security PIN from GM's Techline Connect server (pulled by VIN) for all-keys-lost work.

GMC What Rolls Out With Us on Every Call

What Rolls Out With Us on Every Call

Everything that GMC key work needs lives in the van: sidewinder blanks for the post-2014 trucks, proximity fobs for the T1XX generation, transponder chips for the early 2000s PK3 era, plus active Techline Connect access for the GM PIN. The work runs through the OBD port at your truck, anywhere from Otay Mesa loading docks to Carmel Valley driveways. No tow, no dealer detour.

GMC Sierra Key Replacement

GMC

The Sierra dominates our GMC call volume across San Diego County. It's also the truck that has cycled through the most key generations in GM's modern history. Quick walk through the eras. Pre-1997 C/K trucks ran purely mechanical keys with no electronics, just a blade. 1997 through 2004 brought PK3 transponder chips standard across the Sierra lineup, programmed via Tech2 or basic OBD. The GMT900 generation (2007 through 2013) introduced PK3 Plus encryption and rolled out integrated remote head keys on most trims, riding on the OUC60221 and OUC60270 FCC platforms.

GMC Why 2014 Reset the Sierra Key Equation

Why 2014 Reset the Sierra Key Equation

2014 was the inflection point. The K2XX generation arrived with three big shifts at once: the high-security sidewinder laser-cut blade, proximity push-to-start as a standard option, and the start of the GM PIN requirement for all-keys-lost jobs. The current T1XX generation (2019 forward) went fully keyless with a transmitter pocket in the center console, mandates a Techline Connect PIN for any all-keys-lost work, and rides the M3N-32337100 smart key platform on most trims. The 2017 model year layered in one more requirement: GM's quick-learn add-key procedure now requires two existing programmed keys, not one.

Every Sierra generation has matching hardware sitting in our inventory, with programming run at your truck from work yards in Otay Mesa up to family Sierras in Carmel Mountain Ranch.

GMC Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz

GMC dealer vs EZ Car Keyz pricing comparison

Quick math on a GMC dealer key visit in San Diego County: $330 to $550 for a smart key, $500 to $1,000 (or higher) for all-keys-lost since the truck needs to be towed in, plus a $100 to $150 diagnostic fee before any actual work starts. Our pricing collapses all of that into a single mobile visit. The blank, the cut, and the programming roll up in one charge at the truck. No tow bill, no diagnostic upcharge, no calendar wait.

GMC Key Problems We Fix

Sound familiar? We handle all of these -on site, same day.

GMC CR2032 in the Fob Has Run Down
CR2032 in the Fob Has Run Down
Number one GMC call we get across the lineup. Every GMC proximity fob runs a CR2032, and the Driver Information Center shows Key Fob Battery Low well before the fob actually quits. East County heat plus high-mileage construction and work truck use accelerates drain on Sierra and Yukon fobs in particular. Important diagnostic: if both fobs fail at the same moment, the culprit is almost always the truck's main battery, not two coincidentally dead fob batteries. Battery swap is a two-minute job, no reprogramming required.
GMC Sierra and Yukon Fob Shells Crack Under Daily Use
Sierra and Yukon Fob Shells Crack Under Daily Use
We see this constantly on 2014 through 2020 Sierra and Yukon trucks running construction jobs across San Diego County. Daily pocket carry, drops onto concrete, and tool-belt friction crack the fob shell. Once the case splits, buttons get sticky or stop registering altogether. Good news: the circuit board inside is almost always undamaged and transfers straight into a new aftermarket shell with zero reprogramming. We carry the shells and handle the swap at the truck in minutes.
GMC Techline Connect PIN Required on 2005+ All-Keys-Lost
Techline Connect PIN Required on 2005+ All-Keys-Lost
This is the GMC-specific gatekeeper that stops a lot of locksmiths cold. Any GMC from 2005 forward with a PK3 Plus or proximity system requires a security PIN pulled from GM's Techline Connect server before a single new key can be programmed. No PIN, no programming, period. The catch is that Techline access has to be active and current to get the PIN out, and many shops don't carry that subscription. Ours is live. We handle mobile all-keys-lost on Sierra, Yukon, Acadia, Terrain, and Canyon across every covered year, anywhere across San Diego County.
GMC 2010+ Sierra and Yukon Keyless Trucks Vulnerable to Relay Attacks
2010+ Sierra and Yukon Keyless Trucks Vulnerable to Relay Attacks
Any Sierra or Yukon with proximity keyless entry from 2010 forward is exposed to relay attacks. The attack works by amplifying the fob signal from inside the house to the truck parked outside, and a typical theft happens in under 30 seconds without setting off any alarm. A class-action lawsuit filed in June 2025 alleges GM knew about the issue since 2022 and hasn't shipped a fix. With the volume of Sierras and Yukons parked in San Diego County driveways, this matters. Faraday pouches over the fob at night plus a visible steering wheel lock are the current best defenses available.

Pro Tip

GMC pro tip

If you drive a 2017 or newer GMC and you're currently down to one programmed key, this matters more for you than for any other brand: book a spare before you lose the one you have. Here's the trap. GM's quick-learn add-key procedure from 2017 forward requires two existing working keys to add a third. Drop down to zero keys (lose or break that single key) and you're no longer doing an add-key job, you're doing a full all-keys-lost. That wipes all prior keys, requires a Techline Connect PIN, takes substantially longer to run, and costs significantly more than the simple add-key would have.

GMC What Waiting Actually Costs

What Waiting Actually Costs

Practical takeaway: the price gap between a quick add-key today and an all-keys-lost later is significant. Booking the spare now is the cheaper move by a margin.

GMC The Cheapest Relay-Theft Defense Available

The Cheapest Relay-Theft Defense Available

On the security side, anyone driving a 2010 or newer Sierra or Yukon with keyless entry should consider a Faraday signal-blocking pouch. Costs a few dollars, blocks the low-frequency signal entirely, and removes relay theft from the threat list. GM hasn't shipped a software fix as of early 2026, even after the June 2025 class-action lawsuit named Sierra and Yukon specifically over the same vulnerability. Until there's a patch, the pouch is the most practical protection on the market.

GMC Key Fob Battery Guide

GMC Opening the Fob Step by Step

Opening the Fob Step by Step

Step one is pulling the hidden mechanical blade out first. Find the small release button on the side of the fob, press it, and slide the blade free. Without the blade in the way, work a coin into the seam on the back of the fob and twist gently to separate the two halves. The CR2032 sits inside, positive face up. Drop in the new cell, snap the shell back together until you hear it click, and slide the blade back into place.
CR2032
GMC What to Watch on the Swap

What to Watch on the Swap

Every GMC proximity fob from 2014 forward uses a CR2032, no exceptions. Three things worth flagging on the actual swap. First, pull the blade before prying the case open, since trying to open the fob with the blade still seated can crack the housing in the wrong spot. Second, skin oils on the new battery contacts cause corrosion over time and shorten battery life, so handle the cell with clean dry hands. Third, the 2017 through 2019 Acadia fob has a housing seam that splits if pried with a metal screwdriver, so stick to a plastic trim tool or a thick coin. After any GMC battery swap, no reprogramming is required.

GMC Owners on Our Service

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."

Gordon Harada
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"EZ Car Keys is by far the best locksmith I've ever used. Marco is prompt, prices are reasonable, and he has the experience that leaves you comfortable. We've used him twice and will never use anyone else!"

Traci Thomas
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
