Right at the Truck

Depends on the year. Quick rundown by era. Pre-1997 GMC trucks and SUVs ran plain mechanical keys with no chip at all. Some mid-1980s through mid-1990s models added VATS, a resistor pellet in the blade as a basic theft deterrent. From 1997 forward, most GMCs use a PK3 transponder chip that has to be programmed to the vehicle. The 2014 Sierra brought the sidewinder laser-cut flip key with proximity push-to-start. From 2019 onward, most Sierra, Yukon, and Canyon trucks went fully keyless with the proximity smart key. Send us the year and model and we'll confirm exactly what's in your truck before dispatching.

VATS is short for Vehicle Anti-Theft System, GM's earliest electronic anti-theft tech. It works by embedding a small resistor pellet in the key blade, and the ignition cylinder reads the resistance value as the key turns. Wrong resistance, no fuel, no starter. GMC ran VATS on select trucks and SUVs from the late 1980s through the mid-1990s. There are 15 possible resistance values, and the key has to match yours exactly to start the engine. A blade cut to the right profile but with the wrong pellet (or no pellet at all) will turn in the ignition fine, but the engine won't crank. We measure the existing key's resistance at the truck and cut a matching one on the spot.

All-keys-lost means you have zero working programmed keys for the truck. On any 2005 and newer GMC running PK3 Plus or proximity, the job requires a security PIN pulled from GM's Techline Connect server using the VIN and proof of ownership. No PIN, no key registration, full stop. We carry active Techline Connect access through our GM diagnostic tooling and handle most all-keys-lost mobile, Sierra and Yukon and Acadia and Terrain and Canyon, anywhere in San Diego County. Critical note for 2017 forward: if you still have one key, the quick-learn add-key path needs two existing keys to add a third. With only one key and an all-keys-lost reset, the full sequence wipes prior keys and starts from scratch, which costs more and takes longer.

Yes for most GMCs, with one important year split. On 2003 through 2016 trucks, adding a spare needs one working key plus an OBD programmer. From 2017 forward, GM's quick-learn procedure requires two existing working keys to add a third without falling back to the full all-keys-lost PIN process. If you only have one key on a 2017 or newer GMC, we can still complete the work by pulling the Techline Connect server PIN, but the job runs longer than a clean add-key would. Have your existing key with you when you call so we can confirm the fastest path before dispatching.

Start with the fob battery, that's the most common cause by a wide margin. Most GMC proximity fobs use a CR2032, and the DIC throws Key Fob Battery Low before the battery quits entirely. If a fresh cell doesn't restore detection, the next diagnostic is whether one fob or both fobs are failing. Both at once almost always means the truck's main battery is the culprit rather than two independent dead fob batteries. A vehicle battery below about 12 volts can block the keyless system from reading fobs even when those fobs are full. If just one fob fails and the truck battery checks out, that single fob likely needs reprogramming.

Three-step backup procedure built into every push-to-start GMC for exactly this situation. Step one: press the release button on the side of the fob and slide out the hidden mechanical blade. Use it to pop the small cover on the driver's door handle and unlock the door manually. Step two: once you're in, drop the dead fob into the transmitter pocket inside the center console, typically between the cup holders. Step three: brake firmly, push start. The induction antenna in the pocket reads the fob's passive transponder chip without any battery power. If the DIC throws No Remote Key Detected, that's the truck prompting you to use the pocket. Swap the CR2032 as soon as you're back home.

Yes, and the exposure window is wide. Any Sierra or Yukon with keyless entry from 2010 forward runs low-frequency proximity signals that relay devices can amplify, letting thieves unlock and start the truck from the street while the fob sits indoors. A class-action lawsuit was filed against GM in June 2025 alleging the company has known about the vulnerability since at least 2022 and failed to act. GM hasn't issued a recall or software patch as of early 2026. The most effective practical countermeasures right now are storing the fob in a Faraday pouch overnight and adding a visible steering wheel lock (relay crews typically skip locked wheels for easier targets). Aftermarket immobilizer options that require a separate PIN to start are also worth a conversation if your truck is high-value.
