Savana Key Generations 1996 to 2025
First Generation (GMT600)
Launch generation 1996-2002 ran VATS resistor pellet and early PK3 transponder depending on year. Mid-cycle transition like the Safari minivan.
Second Generation (GMT610)
2003-2014 builds standardized on PK3 immobilizer with Philips ID46 transponder. Same workflow as Envoy and Sierra from the same era.
Third Generation (GMT610 Facelift)
2015-2021 refresh moved to a more refined PK3+ architecture. Same ID46 chip family, tighter BCM logic. Common fleet ticket from National City and Imperial Beach.
Fourth Generation (GMT610 Update)
2022-2025 builds run Global B immobilizer auth. Tighter trust chain after 12V events. We have current firmware on the truck.
Identify Your Savana Key
A metal key with a transponder chip inside. No buttons, no remote, no battery to worry about. Looks simple but the chip has to be programmed to your van's computer.
PK3 transponder with Philips ID46 chip. 2003-2014 build.
PK3+ refined remote-head transponder. 2015-2021 build.
Global B proximity or transponder. 2022-2025 refresh.

Savana Problems We Fix in San Diego
PK3 Immobilizer Sync Loss
Mid-2000s Savana fleet vans lose immobilizer sync after a decade-plus of work duty. Dash lights, no crank. We re-pair on-site, no tow.
Ignition Cylinder Wear on Fleet Vans
Fleet Savanas run 200K+ miles. Cylinders wear hard. Fresh-cut keys buy time, but if the cylinder is shot we say so before cutting.
Global B Auth Drops (2022+)
Refresh Savanas sometimes drop the trust chain after fleet 12V swap. We rebuild auth with current firmware.
Worn Rubber Buttons on Remote-Heads
Fleet use wears through rubber dome buttons fast. We rebuild housings or transfer chips to fresh shells on-site.
Can You Program a Savana Key in Your Yard?
No on VATS. Resistance has to be matched and blade cut on shop equipment.
Sort of on early PK3. Two-key on-board procedure if you have two working keys. New key still needs cut and chip programmed first.
No on refresh PK3+. Pro tools required.
No on Global B. Server auth required.

Savana Trivia
The Savana launched in 1996 as GMC's twin of the Chevy Express, replacing the older Vandura. The GMT600 platform under both vans has stayed in production longer than nearly any other GM vehicle line, with the same basic chassis carrying through 2025. The 2022 refresh finally migrated the Savana to Global B immobilizer architecture, the same auth backbone that runs the Hummer EV.
