Express Key System Through 25+ Years
Mechanical Key, No Chip
Early Express vans kept things simple. Your key is a plain mechanical cut with no transponder chip and no immobilizer system. We cut it on the spot, hand it over, and you are driving. No programming needed.
Transponder Key With Passlock
GM stepped things up here with a mixed era. The 2003-2007 Express vans still ran Passlock with no transponder chip in the key. From 2008 onward, GM moved to a Philips Crypto 2 (ID46) transponder chip in the key head and PK3+ immobilizer. We verify your VIN before cutting so you get the right setup, and program on-board when a working key is present.
Remote Head Key With PK3+
Now your key has buttons baked right into the head: lock, unlock, and panic. Chip upgraded to an ID46, and the immobilizer moved to GM's PK3+ system. Programming requires OBD-II access, which means we plug into the diagnostic port under your dash and write the key to your van's computer.
Remote Head Key With Server Authentication
Same remote head key design and ID46 chip as the 2015-2019 models, but GM added server-based authentication on some 2022 and newer vans. That means certain programming steps need to be verified through GM's online servers. We handle this with our Autel IM608 and NASTF credentials, though some scenarios on the newest models may require dealer involvement. We will tell you upfront before rolling out.
Identify Your Express Key
1999-2007 Express PassLock key. Bare metal blade, no plastic head, no chip. Security lives in the cylinder, not the blade.
2008-2014 Express PK3+ key. Plastic head with Hitag2 chip molded inside, 3-4 buttons (lock, unlock, panic), CR2032.
2015+ Express remote-head with updated Hitag2 chip. Same general shape, same OBD-only programming workflow.
Same look and feel as the 2015-2019 key, but newer models may require online server verification during programming.
Pricing by Generation
Pricing covers blank, cut, PassLock relearn or PK3+ OBD programming, and the trip to wherever the van sits across San Diego County.
EZ vs. the Dealer
Same Autel IM608 and VVDI platforms the dealer bay uses. Difference is we bring them to your driveway for about half the price.
Express Key and Ignition Problems We Fix Most
PassLock Drift on High-Mileage Vans
Hall-effect sensor in the Express cylinder drifts under years of fleet heat and vibration, BCM pulls fuel, security light glares. We diagnose curbside, swap the cylinder or hardwire a PassLock bypass so the van quits stranding your route.
Transponder Chip Failure
High-mileage Express cylinders shed wafer pressure under fleet abuse. Key starts sticking, refusing to turn, or wiggling without engaging. We replace the cylinder on-site, recode to existing keys, no dealer keyfit charge.
Fob Battery Burn
2008+ Express PK3+ chip loses sync after BCM updates or deep voltage drops. We recode the chip to the BCM curbside with the proper scanner.
PIN Retrieval Issues (2020+)
Before we recommend anything on a 2020+ Express, we check if we can pull the BCM PIN with our tools. GM locked PIN retrieval on some later models so tight only dealer-level access works. We verify before driving out so you never pay for a wasted trip.
Express DIY: Realistic Limits
PassLock-era (1999-2007) Express vans accept the 30-minute BCM relearn with one working key. Hands-off, no scanner needed, just patience while ignition cycles three times for 10 minutes each.
2008+ PK3+ Express needs OBD scanner programming for any new chipped key. The fob buttons (lock, unlock) can be resynced on-board after CR2032 swap.
All-keys-lost on a PK3+ Express means SPS PIN sourcing for some years. Marco has the GM Techline account, so we handle the PIN side ourselves and complete the job curbside.

Express Fleet Trivia
Quietly impressive Express stat: GM put it on the GMT610 platform back in 2003 and that platform is still in production today, making it one of the longest-running van platforms in automotive history. The Express also shares its key system with the GMC Savana down to the cut, so if you have driven both in your fleet, the keys are essentially interchangeable across same-generation vans.
