Out in Bostonia, over near the east side of El Cajon, I got a call about a 2017 Chevrolet Express that would not start reliably. The owner had already had someone else work on it. That first locksmith got paid, handed over a key, and left. Sometimes it started, sometimes it sat there doing nothing.
When I pulled up, the owner walked me through what happened. The previous guy had cut a key that fit the door and ignition mechanically, but the van would crank and die, or just sit there with the security light on. He had been running late to jobs for two weeks, never knowing if the van would cooperate.
I connected my programmer to the diagnostic port and pulled up what was enrolled. The previous key had been partially programmed. The transponder was in there, but it was not completing the handshake correctly with the immobilizer. The fob side was not enrolled at all, which is why the lock and unlock buttons did nothing.
I cleared the enrolled keys, ran a full all-keys-lost sequence, and registered his new remote head key from scratch. Both sides, transponder and fob, came up clean. He tested the lock and unlock buttons himself, standing in the parking lot. Then he started it three times in a row just to be sure.
The dealer in the area had already quoted him for a replacement key and programming. He said it was a painful number. What he paid me was a fraction of that, and the van actually worked when I left.
