2005 Chevrolet Express
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2005 Chevrolet Express Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Shadowridge, I got a call from a guy who runs a small landscaping crew out of a 2005 Express. He had two keys left, both beat up, and one snapped off in the door lock during a cold morning.

The other was so worn down it would occasionally slip past the ignition wafers without turning over. He needed working keys fast because his guys showed up at 6 AM and the van had to move.

I pulled up to his place in Vista with my van and decoded the lock from the door cylinder, since the remaining key was too worn to trust for an accurate cut. Decoding directly from the lock gives you the actual bitting, not whatever the worn key suggests anymore. Cut two new keys on site from that reading, tested both in the door, the ignition, and the rear cargo locks.

He watched me cut them and asked if I needed to plug into anything. Told him no, this one is just metal and a good cut. He seemed almost suspicious, like it should be harder. Then both keys turned clean on the first try and he just nodded and went back inside to make coffee.

The dealer would have wanted him to bring the van in, probably quoted him a wait time measured in days, and charged accordingly. He paid way less, never moved the van, and had two working keys before his crew arrived.
