Traverse Key Systems Through the Years
First Generation (Lambda)
Your Traverse started with a traditional remote head key, the kind you physically turn in the ignition. Uses a Philips Crypto 2 (ID46) transponder chip inside the key head that communicates with GM's PK3+ immobilizer system. No push button start here. We program these through the OBD-II port, and in some cases you can even use GM's 10-minute relearn procedure yourself if you have a working key.
Second Generation (C1)
Chevy stepped things up here with a full smart key system. Your Traverse now uses a proximity fob with an ID46 chip, four buttons, push button start, and a high-security laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside. Programming still goes through OBD-II, but the PK3+ immobilizer requires pro scan tools and PIN extraction. No more DIY options for the transponder side.
Second Generation Facelift (C1)
GM added server-based authentication for 2024, which means the key programming has to be validated online through GM's servers. Same ID46 chip, same smart key form factor, same CR2032 battery. But the programming process now requires GM SPS access, which adds time and cost compared to earlier years.
Third Generation (C1-2)
Newest Traverse rides on GM's updated C1-2 platform with enhanced security. Still a smart key with push button start and PK3+ immobilizer, but programming is server-auth only. This generation is dealer-level security, and we will be upfront with you about what we can and cannot do before rolling out.
Identify Your Traverse Key
Chunky key with buttons baked into the head. You turn it in the ignition to start the car. Transponder chip is hidden inside the plastic housing.
Lambda Traverse PK3+ remote-head: plastic head with chip molded in, 4-5 buttons, CR2032.
C1XX Traverse proximity smart fob: 4-5 buttons, hidden valet blade tucks inside, push-button start.
The latest generation smart key on GM's new platform. Push button start with server-based programming required.

Traverse Problems We Fix Most
Traverse No-Start with Security Light Lit
PK3+ chip lost sync to the BCM after deep voltage drop or ignition cylinder weakening. Engine spins, no fuel, security light glares. We diagnose curbside, recode the chip, swap the cylinder if needed, you keep driving.
Smart Key Battery Burn
Traverse cylinders past 100K miles can shed wafer pressure and refuse to read the chip cleanly. We replace the cylinder on-site, recode to existing keys.
BCM Programming Lockout
C1XX Traverse proximity fobs lose BCM pairing after firmware updates. We rerun the pairing curbside with the proper scanner.
Blade Wear on High Security Keys
We check the blade first on 2018+ Traverses before assuming electronics. The laser-cut emergency blade wears, causing intermittent no-starts that look exactly like transponder failure. Blade issue? We cut a fresh one on-site, no full key needed.
Traverse DIY by Generation
Lambda Traverse (2009-2017) fob buttons resync on-board after CR2032 swap. Chip pairing is OBD-scanner-only.
C1XX Traverse (2018+) proximity smart fobs need scanner programming for any pairing change. Buttons resync on-board after battery change.
All-keys-lost on a 2018+ C1XX Traverse needs SPS PIN from GM Techline. Marco has the account, so we source the PIN and complete the job curbside.
Same server-auth requirement as 2024, on a new platform with enhanced security. This one requires pro tools and GM server access. We will confirm what is possible for your specific VIN before scheduling.

Traverse Lambda Trivia
Traverse parts trivia: it shares the Lambda platform with the Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia, and from 2009 to 2017 the key systems across all three were essentially interchangeable. GM built one platform, three brands, and one key architecture to rule them all. One of the rare cases where your Chevy key could theoretically start a Buick.
